Pentagon Seeks Promotion for Academy Chief
Commander Is Subject of Complaints About Religion

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (May 10) - The Pentagon said Monday it wants to promote a top commander at the Air Force Academy - a born-again Christian who has been the subject of complaints that he improperly mixes religion with education.

The announcement about Brig. Gen. Johnny Weida came one day before the scheduled arrival of a task force investigating allegations that cadets were pressured to attend religious services, public prayers were held before official events and Jewish cadets were harassed and insulted at the Colorado Springs school.

In an e-mail in May 2003, Weida urged cadets to "ask the Lord to give us the wisdom to discover the right. ... The Lord is in control. He has a plan." Later he issued a memo stating that cadets are accountable first to their God.

"I am absolutely shocked that anyone would get a promotion in the middle of an investigation in which he is a central figure," said the Rev. Barry Lynn, executive director of Americans United for the Separation of Church and State. His organization conducted a two-month investigation of religious intolerance at the academy and has threatened a lawsuit if corrective action isn't taken.

What is it with Colorado? Wasn't there a recent announcement that Porter Goss wants to move the domestic operations of the CIA to Colorado? And of course Focus on the Family and the Coors family are already there.

Please, I'm not criticizing Colorado--I have no room to talk, sitting here in Texas, but I'm starting to wonder if some new offensive hasn't been launched there. And wasn't Neil Bush there before his world collapsed? I guess if he hadn't been even more incompetent than Georgie, he would be governor of CO right now.

undisclosed government and military sites-all in COLORADO. Hey, an Air Force pilot on his first LIVE BOMB exercise broke formation over Arizona in his A-10 and headed into Colorado with a ton of LIVE BOMBS over America-and he came from a USAF family with a strong religious background.

He was stationed here at Davis-Monthan AFB in Tucson. They found the wreckage of the plane and a small part of Captain Button, but they never found any of the bombs that his A-10 was carrying, or the rest of his body.

There was a story here in the local papers that said he was being investigated for something involving children.
