Bush Donor Set to be Envoy to UK
Bush donor set to be envoy to UK

Ewen MacAskill, diplomatic editor
Friday May 13, 2005
The Guardian

George Bush looks likely to appoint a major Republican donor to one of the diplomatic plum jobs - that of ambassador to the Court of St James.

According to US and British diplomats, the White House is planning to announce soon that the next ambassador to Britain will be Robert Holmes Tuttle, a Californian businessman and party donor.

The announcement has been delayed by the wrangling between the White House and the Senate over the appointment of John Bolton as ambassador to the UN. The Senate also has to approve the British post, which has consequently been pushed down the queue.

2. From the familiy of oldtime Reagan advisors...
I'm guessing that. Frankly, I'm too tired and lazy to go a-googling.

But Holmes Tuttle was one of the fatcat right-wing assboils who launched Ronnie Reagan's career. Not surprisingly, he was a car salesman (Holmes Tuttle Ford in Los Angeles). Along with others like Justin Dart of the Dart drugstore chain in California.

These were the people Nancy Reagan snubbed after Ronnie got to the White House. After using their money and connections for years, she thought a bunch of ignorant far-right car dealers and drugstore owners just weren't CLASSY enough for the new American royalty like the Reagans...a couple of failed hack actors.

Nancy must be pissing her Depends at the thought of a Tuttle becoming Ambassador To The Court Of St. James. HA!

5. I don't know if the US pays its ambassadors appointed like this
but if they do, then that $100,000 was a good investment. The last ambassador proved there's no actual work you have to do in this position - you just leave it up to your flunkies. Other countries' ambassadors are expected to do things like talk to politicians, or the media. The last US one was invisible, despite holding the office all through the Iraq invasion. We've now gone 10 months without one, and everything's worked just fine.

The excuse for the last one was he was a horse breeder who already knew the Queen, so he could chat with her at functions. This one will presumably try to sell her a Ford Expedition.

6. BUT WHERE are they gonna dump Shrub's new Poodlesniffer?

The Ambassadorial Residence Winfield House in the Outer Circle in Regent's Park was lost in a protracted defamation/harassment lawsuit in the UK last summer and now belongs to a cousin of the late President Harry S Truman's daughter Margaret Truman Daniel, and his wife, who also own St John's Lodge and the Holme in Regent's Park Inner Circle, Hanover Lodge in the Outer Circle and over 200 freehold properties in the rest of Regent's Park.

Winfield House has been boarded up for nearly a year, all the dioplomatic cops are gone and I understand that the Trumans are sending in their own decorators later this summer to measure up for new drapes etc: the house is going to be the main london residence of their eldest daughter Megan Truman Tucker and her husband and children.
