Demoted General Tells Newspaper She Was Never Arrested in Alleged Shoplifting Incident
The Associated Press

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. (AP) - The highest-ranking officer punished in the Abu Ghraib prison abuse scandal says she was never charged or even arrested for shoplifting and the Army only brought the allegation so it could demote her.

Former Brig. Gen. Janis Karpinski, whose Army Reserve unit was in charge of the prison during the abuse of Iraqi inmates, gave details of how the allegation arose in an interview published Friday by The Signal of Santa Clarita.

Karpinski was demoted to colonel last week after the Army's inspector general investigated allegations against her of dereliction of duty, making a "material misrepresentation" to investigators, failure to obey a lawful order and shoplifting.

The Army said only the shoplifting and dereliction of duty allegations were substantiated.

"They had nothing about Abu Ghraib to use against me," she said. "So they pull this flaky allegation out and use it to demote me? ... To save face? To mislead the American public yet again?"

2. The first line of the story is misleading.
She really wasn't punished in the scandal was she?

4. I have problems with this....
whole situation. I'm not saying that this woman is completely blameless but what about her superiors? Also, I have heard her talk on several TV news shows and she has stated that she asked for more help and never received it -- help that is with experienced correction officers. Frankly, I think this whole thing is a coverup of the first order.

3. She's a "shoplifter", a "deserter" commits larceny...They're desperate.
Just heard about the mechanic who they're charging with desertion because he refused to ship out pending a ruling on his CO claim. He is also being charged with Larceny because the Army claims he ripped them off for hazardous duty pay they paid him while he was still stateside.
His attorney states that when he figured out he was getting pay he wasn't entitled to, he informed his superiors.
Bet they lost any paperwork existing on THAT.

these allegations are so infantile, they MUST be coming from Rumsferatu himself...

5. seems the army went digging for info but did they find it or make it up?

....Karpinski told the newspaper the basis for the allegation was a misunderstanding that occurred in 2002 at an Air Force base store in Florida.

A colonel at the time, Karpinski said she removed a bottle of facial cream from her purse, then returned it while rummaging for her cell phone. A security guard believed the bottle belonged to the shop, but store personnel later concluded it was her property and had been "clearly partially used."

6. While I not saying it does not happen
A full Col with over 22 years makes $96,000 per year BASE pay. Housing and food and others add to this......

So to really shoplift a $5 item does not compute.....
