Outlawed party says it won't attend Havana dissident assembly
The Associated Press
HAVANA -- An outlawed Cuban political party said Monday it won't attend a major dissident assembly this week because the event is partly backed by Miami-based exile groups that support violence.
Cuba's Popular Republican Party is the latest group to say it will not participate in the general meeting of the Assembly for the Promotion of Civil Society in Cuba planned for Friday.
"We consider that the assembly is affiliated with terrorist groups," Reynaldo Gantes, the party's secretary general, told international journalists.

Among organizations backing the meeting is Alpha 66, a commando type group that has favored the violent overthrow of Fidel Castro's government.
"Without separating ourselves from our traditional strategy of combat, we understand the importance of recognizing and supporting all efforts of our brothers on the island," Alpha 66 wrote in a letter posted on the assembly's official Web site.
