British MP Galloway says 'blew away' U.S. committee
LONDON (Reuters) - British lawmaker George Galloway claimed victory over a U.S. Senate committee which accused him of profiting from the Iraq oil-for-food program in a triumphant speech to supporters on Wednesday.

"We blew them away," an emotional Galloway told a rally in London after giving evidence to the panel examining how former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein used oil to reward politicians.

"From the emails and feedback we've had from all over the world it is true undoubtedly that there was a worldwide audience out there waiting for someone to speak the truth to power," he added.

15. I am at the point where I want to start writing pleading letters to the
press and governments of other countries asking them to come rescue us.
Send up a flare, the American people need help. We certainly can't get it from most of our own elected officials. Why can't we have someone, anyone who stands up to the powers that be in this country the way George Galloway did. I felt so sad that he had to leave and fly home the next day. I wanted him to stay here and take his act on the road.

We need you Mr.Galloway, please come back.

21. What is distressing is that

Americans seem to have lost the ability to fight for their rights themselves while standing by and seeing the rights of people in other parts of the world are destroyed in THEIR name!!.

23. Plenty of us are fighting for our rights.
You just don't hear about it because our press won't report it.
I personally write an average of 10 letters a day to government officials here and call their offices, attend protests whenever I can, donate to progressive causes a lot more than I can afford to, and read any ounce of truth I can get my hands on. There are millions just like me who are doing the same. Our elections have been stolen, our press is either clueless, complicit, or muzzled. Our people, those of us who are aware, are becoming more and more afraid of becoming the disappeared if we speak out but we still do.

Easy to say that we have lost the ability to fight for our rights ourselves. In Finland you still have a democracy. We are losing ours and its not without a fight believe me. We were still naive enough this last election to believe our votes still counted. They don't and now we will have to come up with plan B to get us out of this mess.

If we could impeach this President without winning back the House first, we would.

34. Although I sympathise with you

you do not have a leader to galvanise your fight - so such a fight is useless and pointless. It is just a lot of pinpricks - but the steam-roller goes on relentless.

Unless you can focus behind a leader soon - all your efforts will be wasted.

Did you see how one man could make an audience erupt during the Galloway testimony? Even here in Finland I was cheering him on. I have been writing to Galloway for several weeks about his testimony.

Which American leader on your side has that charisma and ability?

Simply said - NONE.

And as far as Finland (and India) is concerned, we have to work very very hard to preserve our freedom as American influence is trying to derail us in many ways.

37. I don't think we don't have them, I think the criminals in power are doing
their best to undermine whatever charismatic or honorable leaders we do have. I too, was cheering Mr. Galloway on when he lambasted the Senate.

We do have leaders with charisma, it's just that we have a very powerful right wing extremist administration that has STOLEN the last three national elections, 2000, 2002, and 2004. Our media is corporate and compromised, so charismatic progressive leaders or even charismatic populist or moderate leaders are subject to attack or are ignored by the media. Many of our people are not informed about what's really happening. Most of them are just so busy trying to make ends meet they don't even have time to get informed.

Paul Wellstone was a great leader who did speak truth to power, just like Mr. Galloway, he unfortunately, and some say highly coincidentally, died in a plane crash just before the 2002 elections. When we have honorable leaders they are smeared or marginalized and even if they manage to win, like Gore and Kerry did, the elections are stolen.

Your interpretation of what is wrong with America is too simplistic and doesn't even begin to address the almost insurmountable difficulties of dealing with the lying, dirty dealing, dangerous, one party rule we are trying to get out from under presently.

I'm sure that Finland and India do work very hard to preserve your democracies, just as there are many here who are working just as hard. Please don't assume we aren't.

39. I do not know about me being simplistic

All I know is that in Finland 99.5% of us belong to Unions which are not the puppets of big business and they fight for our rights. Further4 we have proportional representation whichmeans no particulasr wing can gain control of the system.

In India the media is independent and hence we can get our news out very quickly. If it had not been for the independent Indian media we would never have achieved our independence from the British.

Both these have virtually vanished in the US and with that I think you have lost your freedom for good. No amount of token agitation will get them back from this situation other than a radical overthrow of the malAdministration.

Further you have no independent election commission but an election system which can hardly be called independent. Hence the only route tto a true democracy has literally vanished.

Whichever way I look at US politics I see nochance for freedom for Americans. I now see a shackled nation and all we will do is to ensure that American does not try to shackle us in other countries.

The only difference is that you have apparently no hope for Americans.
We are in bad trouble, but we have been before, and we are for the most part hard working, resilient, imaginative, and deeply good people. People are waking up here, and believe me, there are more of us than there are of them.

We have a very old expression here from the sixties.
The Revolution will not be televised.

Send a little hope our way instead of judgement.

17. Here's my email, will print and mail a hard copy also!
If he is not a Knight, he should be!!!

Sir Galloway,

I want to thank you for stating so clearly and forcefully the beliefs of many Americans here in the United States! As the sister of a Gulf War I Veteran I don't think we should have started this illegal, immoral war in Iraq.

I appreciate your frankness and willingness not to mince words or sugar coat your speech. Hopefully many more Americans heard what you had to say and will start to realize what a whopper of a story they've been sold by the Bush Administration.

You are welcome anytime for a repeat performance! I have saved a copy of your speech and will use it to keep my spirits up until Bush and Co. finally decide they have made enough profit from the deaths of our soldiers and innocent Iraqi civilians and call an end to this war.

Kindest regards,

xxxx

35. Sir?
I don't think mr. Galloway, principled egalitarian and socialist, is flattered by being addressed by 'Sir'. I'm quite certain he's not part of the blue-blooded nobility, Sir George. I don't think he minds, either, but you know how to address socialists if you wan't to make them happy, comrade. :)

25. Galloway savages the Senate
We have been inundated with messages of support following George Galloway's defence of himself and attack on the US senate yesterday. You can read reports in most daily newspapers and on many websites which give a flavour of how he took their agenda apart.

If you haven't yet seen it for yourself, then the following sites will be useful
We will also be carrying a full audio recording on this site of George's appearance from later tonight.

In George Galloway's words, his election as MP means "we have shone out a ray of hope into the corners of Britain long abandoned by New Labour to the darkness Blair and his friend George Bush have cast across the globe." Help that hope grow and strengthen.
