Female TV Star murdered in Afghanistan (after Mullahs got her fired)

The woman killed for pop music

BY CATHERINE PHILP

Bright and modern, she hosted a music show in Afghanistan. It drove extremists to murder her

SHAIMA REZAYEE was the face of a new generation of young Afghan women: she discarded her shalwar kameez and burkha for Western clothes and a glamorous job as a television presenter on Kabul’s answer to MTV.

But two months ago her bosses were forced to dismiss Ms Rezayee, 24, under pressure from conservative mullahs who were disgusted by the “unIslamic values” of her music show. This week she paid for her unconventional choices with her life: she was shot dead in her home by an unknown assailant. Police said that they believed the killing was linked to her former job as a “veejay” — video journalist — on Hop, which was broadcast by Tolo TV, one of a number of private stations set up since the fall of the Taleban.

4. Fired because her show didn't represent "Islamic values"
man, that sounds alot like something that might happen here. The Fundies and the Taliban have more in common than they'd like to admit.

16. Remember the Md. Gov's wife who wanted to shoot Britney Spears?
Md. First Lady: She Would 'Shoot Britney Spears'
http://www.nbc4i.com/entertainment/2537264/detail.html

In remarks taped by WFMD Radio, the first lady said, "If I had an opportunity to shoot Britney Spears, I think I would."

Over there the fanatics dare to do what the fantics here don't dare to do yet.

7. Let's don't call them
freedom fighters in Afghanistan or in Iraq. They certainly have no intention of fighting for freedom for women.

8. speaking of that...
aren't these religious conservatives the very same that Reagan adored so much?

And will "Charlie Wilson's War" touch on this question?

the media no longer talks about the invasion of Afghanistan because things are going so well over there.

13. The fact that it occurred is just plain unfortunate...
... but the timing *should* be unfortunate for Pickles' PR campaign; however, I doubt that US media will highlight this fact contradicting the preferred theme.

17. Guess what? The "culture" in that part of the world isn't
mainstream American culture, and it isn't going to be probably ever.

Those people have huge cultural biases about stuff like this. Disrespect them at your peril.

19. Female Afghan TV host shot dead in Kabul
KABUL, Afghanistan — A ground-breaking Afghan television host whose Western style drew praise from youthful fans and condemnation from Muslim clerics may have been slain with involvement from her own brothers, police said Friday.

Shaima Rezayee, 24, who tossed aside her burqa for Western dress and became a host on an MTV-style music show, knew her life was in danger, according to a radio interview she gave not long before she was shot in the head at her Kabul home Wednesday.

Her slaying highlights the struggle between urban young people and their conservative elders for the future of Afghanistan and its Islamic values. Television and radio stations like the one that featured Rezayee — often importing music and styles from other countries — have been leaders in probing the boundaries of acceptability.

Rezayee, like other young Afghan women, was denied schooling and forced to wear the burqa in public until the Taliban regime was ousted by the U.S. invasion in late 2001. The Taliban also banned music — even humming on the street.

23. We need to arm and train the afghan women in self defense
Our military is there. Our own service women are good role models in this respect. It would be great to see a well-armed military unit of afghan women who have better weaponry than the asshole men that are trying to kill "uppity women".
