Parties Court Blacks in Filibuster Fight
WASHINGTON - Republicans and Democrats injected racial politics into the struggle over President Bush's judicial nominees and the Senate's filibuster rules on Thursday, underscoring partisan differences while compromise-minded senators from both parties pursued an elusive agreement.

"The attempt to do away with the filibuster is nothing short of clearing the trees for the confirmation of an unacceptable nominee to the Supreme Court," said Democratic leader Harry Reid. He accused the president of an attempt to "rewrite the Constitution and reinvent reality" with his demand for a yes-or-no vote on all nominees.

Countered Republican Sen. Rick Santorum (news, bio, voting record) of Pennsylvania, "It's the equivalent of Adolf Hitler in 1942." He said Democratic protests over Republican efforts to ensure confirmation votes would be like the Nazi dictator seizing Paris and then saying, "I'm in Paris. How dare you invade me. How dare you bomb my city. It's mine."

The day of choreographed debate on the floor unfolded as compromise-minded senators negotiated in privately in the office of Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), R-Ariz., and leaders of both parties held dueling staged-for-television events designed to court black voters.

1. Republicans play the race card...again.
It never fails to amuse me that the only tactic the Repubs can use to draw in minority support is by painting Dems and liberals as bigots.
They know that their nominees don't cut it on legitimate grounds and this is why the Dems are threatening to filibuster, yet they constantly try to claim the real reason is because they are Hispanic like Gonzales, black females like Brown or a "person of faith" like Owens.

I find this the most incredible example of hypocritical double talk coming from a party that opposed every civil rights issue and made up of ex-Dixiecrats still angry about the end of Jim Crow.

As much as they want to portray Dems and progressives as modern-day racists, I would challenge them to find anyone throughout recent, post-Lincoln history that fought for the rights for blacks, women, immigrants and now gays, that have also called themselves conservatives and/or Republicans.

Everytime they pull this stuff not only don't I think they're fooling anyone, but I also find it rather insulting to the very same groups they are trying to win over.

4. Godwin's Law says: Santorum loses. We win. Neener neener neener!
Godwin's Law states that, in an argument, the first person to invoke Hitler and/or the Nazis loses the argument.

It is unclear, however, whether Godwin's Law applies to those (like Santorum) who a reasonable person might confuse with a Nazi...

5. a nice little metaphor..
it's the equivalent of big dick shelby supporting a filibuster to kill any compromise on healthcare reform in 1994, switching parties as Re pukes win a majority in the Senate, and then declaring.."How dare you use the filibuster against the Republican Senate, it's mine!!!"
