Convicted Iowa priest hired by Diocese (Served time for child pornography)

IOWA CITY, Iowa - A Catholic priest who pleaded guilty to using a church computer to download child pornography has been hired to perform maintenance duties at the Davenport Diocese.

The Rev. Richard Poster, the former director of liturgy and publisher of the newspaper for the diocese, entered the plea in August 2003 and was sentenced to one year in federal prison. He was released earlier this year.

Although Poster remains a priest, he is barred from any ministerial duties pending a Vatican decision whether he should be defrocked.

Diocese spokesman David Montgomery said Poster's employment includes several conditions, including direct supervision, no contact with children and no access to computers.

2. I have criticised the Church for this repeatedly
but here I fail to see what it did wrong. They have taken steps to be sure he isn't around kids and is supervised. Would it be better for them to simply wash their hands of him and send him off to find victims on his own? The Church seems to be doing the right thing here.

4. Yes I do think he should be tossed out of the church
We are not talking about petty theft here we are talking about CHILD PORNOGRAPHY. Do you think he is cured? HELL NO this type of thing pisses me off. He should be tossed out and have to report where he lives. The church will not cure this even if he is supervised it's a proven fact. Prison will also make sure he is not around children and thats where he should be not under the supervision of a church.

5. He has served his time
I can certainly see an argument that a year wasn't enough but unless the Church had something to do with that they can't be blamed for society being lenient. At this point you have choice A he gets released to the community with little to no supervision or choice B he is supervised and kept around adults. I prefer choice B.

8. The church has not done a good job
supervising any priest in the past. Why would they start now. I think the Church doesn't give a damn about children. They see them as future contributors.

11. Name another employer in their right mind that would catch an employee...

...using the companies computers to commit a felony of this nature, and then after the person was released from the federal pen would then see fit to hire that former employee back again. I can't think of one that would do such a thing.

Just for the public relations aspect alone they would not. This is like saying do whatever you want to do, and even if you get caught and imprisoned there will be a job waiting for you when you are released.

3. This priest should be sent to the Vatican.
He can perform "maintenance duties" for pope Benedict XVI with (hopefully) lots of supervision from other priests.

Otherwise, I'm not too comfortable with him in any church in the US.

10. These guys just don't get it do they.
I can understand the whole Christian forgiveness thing but to hire a man with pedophile tendencies simply because he's a priest flies in the face of common sense.
