Kentuckians checking on FBI scrutiny
ACLU hopes to learn who gets monitored

The Courier-Journal

PADUCAH, Ky. -- Raymond Payne first learned that the FBI might be interested in him when he tried to cross the border into Canada last fall for some sightseeing.

Payne, who is pastor of Mead Memorial United Methodist Church in Russell in Eastern Kentucky, said he and his wife were stopped by the Canadian border patrol and questioned for about 90 minutes.

The Canadians told Payne that he was the subject of an FBI file, he said in a telephone interview Wednesday. That bothered him, he said, because he has never been charged with a crime or been politically active.

But Payne now thinks that an Internet book order that he placed after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks -- some reading material about Islam and several copies of the Quran for his congregation's comparative study of religions -- may tie into the agency's interest.

1. I just went to my online library
and ordered some books relating to the Quran. Anyone else in? I can't afford to buy anything right now, but for those of you who can I think a nice rash of online buying, you know, cuz after the Newsweek debacle we really need to educate ourselves about this. The media is being muzzled. What's a patriot to do?

2. I wonder if they track credit card purchases?
I've bought a lot of political books in the last year or so.

Perhaps I'll stop by my local library and get some books on terrorism, bin Laden, etc.

3. well the OP does say that the ACLU hopes to find out
who get monitored.
I wonder if the second hand bookstores come in for any scutiny, including who is selling what books.

my :tinfoilhat: feels just a little snug. More library books ought to help. Maybe some from other libraries too.

4. Support your local gestapo ...
they have friends all over the place.

And don't you know that comparative religion is suppose to compare Baptists to Lutherans?
