U.S. doesn't have needed support in U.N. to punish Iran
Edited on Fri May-20-05 05:09 PM by cal04
Even if Iran decided to go ahead with its nuclear activities, the United States doesn’t have the support from China in the UN Security Council to punish Iran, said a State Department official. Testifying before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Undersecretary for Political Affairs Nicholas Burns called on Iran not to resume its nuclear program, saying: "anything could happen" if the case was referred to the United Nations Security Council.

While Washington and the European allies are united, China doesn’t back their approach of referring the Islamic Republic to the UNSC for possible sanction, Burns said. Since China has strong economic ties with Tehran, it can use its veto power to cancel any UN resolution against Iran.

Burns' remarks come days before foreign ministers representing the EU big-three; Britain, France and Germany meet with Iranian national security adviser Hassan Rowhani. Last November, Iran agreed to suspend all activities related to Uranium enrichment. But recently it threatened to resume converting uranium into a gas. Burns’ remarks echo UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan’s concerns.

2. That is why aWoL needs Bolt-on. His job is to piss off the UN
He will advocate a radical plan to punish Iran, have China or France or Russia veto the plan, And be left to say
"SEE WE HAVE TO GO IT ALONE AGAIN".
Will the NEoCon's ever learn?

4. The continuing question, "Why does the U.S. single out Iran when
India, Israel, and Pakistan have nuclear weapons and have not signed the NPT?"

How long before Iran follows Bush and N. Korea by unilaterally rejecting an arms treaty, the NPT. Bush rejected the ABM treaty and N. Korea rejected the NPT?

12. Russia also said they will not support sanctions against Iran
Both China and Russia have veto power.

I believe we're seeing the end of U.S. hegemony in the world.

Thanks George!

21. China cut their U.S. debt instrument purchases in half last month
China is reinvesting so much of their current cash surplus, they will continue to slow down purchases.

Say goodbye to the housing bubble.

20. They may just be planning a quick airstrike at the nuclear facilities and
say it is an Israeli operation. That way there will be no War Powers needed and no ground troops required. The 'surgical strike' ploy has worked before, but may not work this time because Iran has vastly strengthened its air defense systems.
