Tsunami Quake Stronger Than Believed ("Earth still ringing like bell")
New York Times:
Tsunami Quake Stronger Than Believed
By REUTERS
Published: May 21, 2005

WASHINGTON, May 20 (Reuters) - The Asian earthquake that triggered the deadly tsunami in December was more powerful than scientists had estimated, according to new studies published in Friday's issue of Science.

"The Earth is still ringing like a bell today," nearly six months after the Sumatra-Andaman earthquake, Roland Burgmann, professor of earth and planetary science at the University of California, Berkeley, told the journal.

According to the study, researchers now believe the quake had a magnitude of 9.15. Initial measurements put it at 9.0. The quake generated a tsunami that killed about 300,000 people in states around the Indian Ocean.

It also set records for the longest fault rupture and the longest duration of faulting, the researchers reported....

1. Friends here at OZ Dept of Meterology still worried!
I'm not a fault line expert by any shadow of a doubt, but friends i have spoken to down here, who are far more knowledgable and informed in this area, have been telling me that they are extremely worried about the Stress created in other parts of the fault line after it tried to relieve itself around Sumatra. Scientific reports that they have been privey to are suggesting that stress levels in other parts of the tectonic plate have increased alarmingly as a consequence of it relieving itself around Sumatra.

2. Stress levels usually go down after relieving oneself.
But, that's the difference between us and mother earth, I guess. I wouldn't go on a long drive with one of these tectonic plates.

4. What are their predictions for future earthquakes in the area?
That is some very scary analysis. Are y'all working on better tsunami warning systems for your part of the globe?
:scared:

somehow everyone here did not hear that the deaths had hit 300,000. Where has MSM been on that and on the science coming out about it. Oh yeah, under neocon thumbs.
