Kaine Camp Decries GOP Ad Tying Democrat to Tax Rise

RICHMOND, May 20 -- The Republican Governors Association on Friday launched the first ad of the Virginia governor's race sponsored by a group from outside the state, accusing Lt. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D) of raising taxes and linking him to former presidential nominee John F. Kerry.
The 30-second commercial, made in part by the same media consultant who produced the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ads last year, opens with the Massachusetts senator's face repeated on a quickly moving filmstrip and an announcer saying, "Another election, another liberal promising to cut taxes."
Later, the ad shows the same filmstrip with Kerry's face and Kaine's face on alternating frames. The ad, which is running across the state but not in Northern Virginia, ends by warning voters that when someone promises to cut taxes, you had "better hang on to your wallet."
Kaine aides quickly condemned the ad as misleading and said it reflects concern in the campaign of Jerry W. Kilgore (R) that Kaine's proposal to reduce homeowner taxes is catching fire with voters.
"They are bringing in the big guns, the out-of-state guns," said Kaine's press secretary, Delacey Skinner. "They are nervous because they've lost ground on the homeowner tax issue."...
