Crowd gets rough and police swarm in after a Minuteman event in Garden Grove.

Three people were injured and at least eight arrested Wednesday in Garden Grove after a motorist drove into a crowd of 300 demonstrators protesting a speech by the founder of the Minuteman Project, authorities said.

The demonstrators had gathered at the Women's Civic Club of Garden Grove on Chapman Avenue about 7:30 p.m. to protest an appearance by James Gilchrist, charging that he and his group were racist.

Gilchrist has denied those claims and insists the group is stopping only illegal immigration. His talk was sponsored by Citizens for Action Now, an anti-illegal immigration group.

The motorist had attended Gilchrist's speech and was leaving when protesters began hitting his van with placards and other objects, said Garden Grove Police Lt. David Kivler. The driver, who was not identified but spoke to a KCAL-TV Channel 9 reporter, said he gunned his car engine to get away from the crowd. The man was arrested.

State senators urge governor to ban Minuteman migration

AUSTIN -- Some state senators have filed a resolution objecting to Minuteman Project plans to patrol the Texas-Mexico border in October.

Critics say the civilian patrols would hurt tourism, trade and the economy. Supporters say the patrols respond to the federal government's failure to secure the border against illegal immigrants, smugglers and potential terrorists.

State Senator Juan Dinojosa of McAllen says he has faith in law enforcement agencies to do their job. He said the last thing officers need is interference from untrained individuals.

Gov. Rick Perry has said he doesn't approve of Minuteman tactics.

I figured this would not be a peaceful project, I just worry about the border war potential. As far as the governor, he does not know if he wants to close the border, build a fence, salute the minutemen or blame it on his lack of English. It is that kind of steady leadership from the governor that will allow cool heads to prevail.

Seems to me they are getting a lot of political attention on a problem the US has ignored for years. On the other hand the situation is ripe for violence. I don't like the thought of illegals taking US jobs and lowering wages. But I know illegals contribute to an economy motivated by greed. Illegals seem to be both the enemy and the victim. How did it get this way?

7. Garden Grove Minuteman Protest Turns Violent

GARDEN GROVE, Calif. -- A protest against the founder of the border-watching Minuteman Project turned violent when a car drove into the crowd, slightly injuring two people, and at least eight people were arrested, police said.


About 300 people turned up Wednesday night outside the Women's Civic Club in this Orange County city to protest a speech by Minuteman Founder Jim Gilchrist of Aliso Viejo.

Protesters accused Gilchrist's group of racism against Hispanics.

"Their racist acts are being masked by patriotism," said Obed Sanchez of Garden Grove.

Gilchrist has denied being racist. Last month, his group posted private sentries along Arizona's border with Mexico to spot illegal immigrants. The effort was praised by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger but condemned by President George W. Bush, who called the volunteers "vigilantes."...

15. Any group that really wants to address the issue of illegals should be

patrolling outside the offices of the folks who make and enforce laws. They should be asking blunt and embarrassing questions about how many employers of illegals have been rounded up and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Real enforcement would go to the source of the problem, and that is the class of people profiting from the whole thing.

it is the very people who want to be minutemen or want to close the borders (including the Gropenator) who benefit most from illegal immigration....of course they are being exploited...all over the world workers are being exploited...but the fact is we also have "legal" immigrants doing these jobs in California, which is, as you so interestingly put it, "rampant" with illegals...I see them and talk to them everyday...most "legal" immigrants understand the plight of the illegal immigrant, because many of them started in this country as illegals...but the fact of that matter is until we are willing to crack down on the people who hire illegals, we are again being hypocritical by simply saying that we need to close the borders

The problem is the lack of enforcement of wage and safety laws. Take away these 'incentives' and employers will have no reason to select an illegal immigrant over a legal resident.

You want to see illegal immigration halted? Train your guns (FIGURATIVELY, Mr. Attorney General Gonzalez!) on those who abuse the cheap labor that illegal immigrants become when the laws on the books aren't followed.
