President to speak at OAS conference in South Florida
President to speak at OAS conference in South Florida

President Bush will attend the Organization of American States General Assembly in Fort Lauderdale next month, the White House announced Friday, while in federal court protesters won a permit to protest near the Broward County Convention Center during the gathering.

Bush, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and foreign ministers from 33 other Western Hemisphere nations will gather June 5 to 7 at the Convention Center to discuss problems in the region and talk about promoting democracy, economic development and human rights.

Bush will arrive at the conference on June 6 and is expected to promote the Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement in remarks to the assembly.

At the meeting the United States also is expected to propose a resolution that would create a committee to monitor the quality of democracy in the region. The idea is seen by some as an attack on Venezuela, whose government has become close to Cuba and Fidel Castro.

The meeting of the OAS comes at a critical time as a number of countries in the region face economic and political troubles that some fear could undo several decades of progress.

Funny thing is, one of the countries in the "region" has been cozying up to Uzbekistan and Islam "don't make me boil you" Karimov. :eyes:

gasp! gasp! gasp! and i hope those countries from south and central america will gasp to death if they have to before
ever allowing the United States to MONITOR THE QUALITY OF DEMOCRACY IN THE REGION...gasp! gasp! gasp!

that would be tantamount to creating a UNITED STATES DEPARTMET OF THE, "U.S. DICTATOR RULES THE AMERICAS" ... or something like that... it would just give too much back-handed, back-door power to the United States over the south and central america region...

o! how i do hope that the representatives from the various OAS countries meeting at the Broward Convention Center that week in June will smear bush's feces right back in his face at him! And, while they are at it, they might as well just throw some of it back at condoleeza rice's face too, so as to show them that they can't be bought, they can't be dictated to, and they can be highly independent of the United States, the bushes, and their wrongheaded policies for the region and for the world!

if only they would have the courage and we should only be so lucky!

3. I'm for the "quality" committee as long as the US goes first to the
docket and it's real people that decide, not government flunkies. Maybe we could get Galloway on the committee.

Quality of Democracy? Now there's a laugh. On the quality scale, what is Iraq???
