President Bush will attend the Organization of American States General Assembly in Fort Lauderdale next month, the White House announced Friday, while in federal court protesters won a permit to protest near the Broward County Convention Center during the gathering.
Bush, Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and foreign ministers from 33 other Western Hemisphere nations will gather June 5 to 7 at the Convention Center to discuss problems in the region and talk about promoting democracy, economic development and human rights.
Bush will arrive at the conference on June 6 and is expected to promote the Dominican Republic-Central American Free Trade Agreement in remarks to the assembly.
At the meeting the United States also is expected to propose a resolution that would create a committee to monitor the quality of democracy in the region. The idea is seen by some as an attack on Venezuela, whose government has become close to Cuba and Fidel Castro.
The meeting of the OAS comes at a critical time as a number of countries in the region face economic and political troubles that some fear could undo several decades of progress.
