Democrats say DeLay-linked group should pay $3.9 million

AUSTIN – House Democrats called on Attorney General Greg Abbott to pursue $3.9 million in damages that could be awarded to the state for a GOP political action committee's violation of campaign disclosure laws.

The Democrats on Friday pounced on this week's verdict in a Travis County district court against Texans for a Republican Majority, a political action committee formed by U.S. Majority Leader Tom DeLay. Judge Joseph Hart found that TRMPAC failed in 2002 state races to report almost $1.3 million in combined contributions and expenditures.

Any campaign or political committee that fails to file accurate reports with the state Ethics Commission "is liable in damages to the state in the amount of triple the amount not reported," according to the Texas Election Code.

"We are writing to ask that you do your part to prosecute these wrong-doers and collect the money they now owe to the state of Texas," a letter to Mr. Abbott said.
