Geldof invites Pope, Mandela and Dalai Lama to Live 8
30/05/2005 - 07:23:29

Bob Geldof has asked the world's most prominent figures, including Pope Benedict XVI, the Dalai Lama and Nelson Mandela to take part in the anti-poverty rally and Live 8 charity concert this summer to mark the first day of the G8 Summit of world leaders.

The campaigning rocker has urged the moral and religious leaders to address crowds at the events in Edinburgh, Scotland in person or via satellite link-up, to prompt leaders of the world's eight largest industrial countries to help impoverished African nations.

The former Boomtown Rat hopes they will join music stars including U2, Paul McCartney and Oasis at the Make Poverty History march, to lobby leaders like US President George W Bush and British Prime Minister Tony Blair into cancelling Third World debt, doubling the aid budget

Geldof and his Band Aid 20 co-organiser Midge Ure will announce details of the fund-raiding event tomorrow at a London press conference.

40. Well the freepers are all ticked at Geldof for this
I don't remember if I am allowed to link to their site, and I am not sure if they need the extra traffic, but freepers are all grumpy and sad about this Live8 concert, boo-hoo.

5. So Geldolf invites the Pope, Mandela and the Dali Lama to help the poor...
Edited on Mon May-30-05 10:01 AM by stlsaxman
and bring about an end to poverty, and the Dali Lama says "This would be a very good way to bring peace into the world, sure- I'll do it!"...

Mandela says "This would be a very good way to give a voice to the people of the world who have none, sure- I'll do it!"

and the Pope says "Fuck the poor! Remember the Golden Rule? 'He who has the gold makes the rules'. I have all the gold so to hell with everyone else!"

Good one, huh?

11. Fear not-
I'd be stupid to give up playing sax for a living. Not everyone gets paid for doing what they love... yes- I'm blessed in the regard...

But- i used to hear that about my singing but thru perseverance I got perty derned good, if I do say so myself.

Still i thought the joke ranked very high on the irony level, though on other levels it was just rank! ;)

36. You don't know any Catholics, do you?
Even the most conservative church I've attended will have things like a petition for domestic workers to earn a living wage and obtain health insurance. Don't make gross generalizations about any faith, and especially not about individuals, and particularly in the fashion you did.

7. WHY?
Edited on Mon May-30-05 10:29 AM by hlthe2b
I hadn't followed Geldof since Live Aid, but with its release on DVD, was curious. I read about everything I could find on the web, about Paula, her leaving Bob for the other rock star who later killed himself and Paula's own heroin death. Bob's adoption of the kids and becoming sucessful in business, his feeling jaded given how little "good" had come since Live Aid.

Why, though, the excoriation? All I read seemed to suggest he was the victim in all that Paula biz. What gives?

emad's ideas in posts #4 and #8 are completely wrong. Note she does not provide a single link for them. Ignore them. Don't worry, Geldof and his charity are law-abiding and honourable.

18. Good to hear...
Having been so out of the whole thing, including all the scandal around his wife, her affair with the INXS lead singer and both deaths, I certainly couldn't speak authoritatively to Emad's accusations. BUt, I'm glad my instincts appear to be correct. I've always thought a lot of Geldof.

I said, with no prompting, "has your gender changed in your profile?"

And you replied "Gender stated in my profile has always been the correct gender."

This has nothing to do with your blog. This is to do with the false statements that you have made here about Geldof. They are not funny - you falsely accused him of sexual crimes.

13. Fascinating. Do tell more.
Wild, unsubstantiated accusations really spice up a quiet Memorial Day.

When you're done slandering Geldof can you elaborate on this "trail of glam rock sex abuse cover ups". Start at the beginning please as I'm totally unfamiliar with the subject.

15. What a load of shit. Think of a story and post it on here.
Conspiracy theorist gone mad, obsessed with any underlying truth. Any death any anything must have something deeper to it. Why don't you concentrate on where the real conspiracies are in the world like the Bush admin. Oil, global corporations.

Where do you get this shit from?

Geldoff is a decent human being who tries to actively make a difference. He gets off his arse and tries to do something about whats wrong in the world. He doesn't sit on his arse and whine on a website and make stories up for his own amusement.

What a joke.

16. Oh, give me a break. Hutchence's death a conspiracy?
There are lots of ways to fake a suicide, and I'm sure they have all been employed many times in many situations. Hutchence's death was so weird and embarrassing, there is no way it was anything other than a horrible, bizarre accident.

A glam rock sex-abuse death cover-up? Why? Who would even care?

24. If you knew what happened to all his fortune then it's disappearance
might give you a clue.

Hutchence's death was played down and whitewashed over because Paula threatened a major wobbly.

She too paid the price in the end.

Anyone who actually went to the funeral - or knows her kids - will tell you just how much has been gagged from public consumption.

29. I think we need to apply Occam's Razor here
These people live in a different world than we do. They are, for lack of a better word, weird. There is a universe of drug abuse and strange behavior in the popular music business. These people take (and are given) liberties that none of the rest of us can afford or even dream about.

If Hutchence was "suicided", they would have just made it look like a regular drug overdose. They would have woven some tale about how the poor guy was found dead in his bed in a pool of vomit; end of story. No one cares about a dead junkie. In two weeks, he would have been completely forgotten by nearly everyone on Earth.

But no, he died under some of the most bizarre and salacious circumstances imaginable.

As far as his fortune, I'm not sure about what all the machinations are with that. When anyone with any appreciable wealth dies, the sharks come out and scavenge whatever they possibly can. This happens no matter how the person dies. It does NOT point to murder or conspiracy.

31. The Hutechence story has yet to be told. UK TV did an investigative
piece about him and his missing millions before his family in Australia threatened to sue. Since then there has been a legal block on both parties while Oz cops investigate claims from both sides that relate to the paper trail Hutchence left after being arrested in a brothel in Thailand in mid 1996.

and that his wife/girlfriend/whatever had a serious drug problem.

And yet I'm somehow supposed to find it hard to believe that Hutchence would die by autoerotic asphyxiation, and that his wife/girlfriend/whatever would die of a drug overdose. I'm supposed to believe that there was an elaborate murder conspiracy and cover-up masterminded by, of all people, Bob Geldoff.

Whatever you say.

19. McCartney, Stones, U2 and Madonna lined up for 'Live Aid II': British news
LONDON (AFP) - A who's who of popular music including Paul McCartney, the Rolling Stones, U2, Madonna and Prince are scheduled to perform this July in a massive successor concert to the Live Aid charity event of 1985, according to a newspaper report.

The event is scheduled to be announced by Irish pop star-turned development activist Bob Geldof in London later Tuesday, Britain's Daily Telegraph reported.

It said that a series of stars had already been confirmed for the July 2 event, which will take place simultaneously in London, Philadelphia and, possibly, other countries worldwide.

Names already confirmed also include British girl group the Spice Girls, whose original five-member line up last performed together in 1998, and the classic line-up of veteran British rockers Pink Floyd, the paper said.

Thought it was that JP guy, didn'tcha, Bob? Bit of a humanitarian, that one, pretty much a free-thinker as far as popes go. Well, Bob, maybe you haven't heard that the Vatican is under new management. Meet His Holiness Benedict XVI, voted by his Seminary graduating class as "most likely to revisit the Inquisition."

Good luck with yer party.
