Hariri's son strikes anti-Syrian blow with poll victory
AFP
May 31, 2005
BEIRUT: The son of assassinated former prime minister Rafik Hariri has won a clean sweep in the Beirut round of Lebanon's parliamentary elections, the first in three decades free of Syria's control.

Riding a sympathy vote for his slain father, candidates in an anti-Syrian coalition led by Saad Hariri won all 19 seats in the Beirut area.

Interior Minister Hassan Sabei, announcing the official results at a news conference last night, said all 10 contested seats were won by Mr Hariri and allies. The remaining nine seats had already been won by candidates on Mr Hariri's ticket before the election because there were no challengers.

2. Better than Syria still being there
Syria forces leaving Lebanon. The Russian army leaving Georgia. Who knows maybe one of these days the U.S. military will leave Iraq and South Korea and every where else.

3. Yep
and if that vote was not rigged then I need to check my lotto ticket.
One more farce. It won't last - people will soon get real angry. So says my neighbour and he should know. His folks are still in Syria.

4. The whole thing was a set-up
I read that the parties had carved up the seats beforehand, so that most were won by acclimation. I suppose Bush/PNAC must have had a hand in this farce too. The turnout was in the 20's. People voted with their feet by not showing up. A sham election.
