Commandments rally held in D.C.
Commandments rally held in D.C.

10/06/03

By SEAN REILLY
Washington Bureau

WASHINGTON -- Under a glorious autumn sun, Clare Zieman of Mobile knelt soldier-straight in her chiffon skirt on the front lawn of the U.S. Capitol. She was fortified by a similarly martial rationale for attending the Sunday afternoon rally in support of the Ten Commandments and suspended Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore.

"The Lord has called me to stand for the truth in this battle," Zieman said.

Several hundred fellow believers appeared to share exactly those feelings at one of the culminating events of the "Save the Commandments Caravan," which made its way from Montgomery to Washington over the last week as a kind of traveling protest against federal court decisions restricting the display of Ten Commandments in courthouses and other public buildings.

Participants held a prayer vigil in front of the U.S. Supreme Court building Sunday evening and planned to deliver at least 250,000 petitions today asking the high court -- as a news release put it-- "to secure the right of Americans to acknowledge God in public life."

1. I guess I would have sympathy for them
If they understood the issue. Because the debate has been framed as anti-God vs God rather than "forcing religion down peoples throat" vs "believe what you want" they are doing nohing but expending energy on a false issue.

2. I'd really like to know why people like this stay in the US
They are always advising liberals "love it or leave it" yet is these religious zealots who obviously don't love the very basis of our country in the Constitution and Bill of Rights. They are always trying to get around that pesky 1st amendment in so many ways. Surely theres a theocracy some where that these people who don't love the constitutional basis of our country could go to.

This isn't the Republic of Gilead yet.

10. I absolutely agree!!
The 10 Commandments belong in every Courthouse!

They belong in every legislature!
They belong in every schoolroom!
They are a true gift from GOD! and should be displayed in every public place!!!

But, please use the correct term for our 10 Commandments - The Bill of Rights!

One last comment, another commentator mentioned this, so I can't take any credit. He was attempting to put the shoe on the other foot for the "other" side on what they were reallly demanding. He mentioned the fact that that the fastest growing religions in the US - is Islam. One day, one of those Islamists is going to be a Governor, another his Attorney General, another his Chief Justice - and they are going put the Koran in the lobby of their Supreme Court. Now how do you feel?

4. As Jesus said-

"Lord, forgive them, for they know not what they do."

Their god has a hoof, horns, a tail, and smells of sulfur.

As Mark Twain said, if Jesus were living in America in the present "there is one thing he would not be- a Christian."

7. If The Lord Called Her to Stand, Why Was She Kneeling??

Is that like the operators who are standing by, when actually they're all seated??

8. What does God sound like?
What does He sound like when He gives out orders to his flock?

These are the people who have destroyed religion.

11. Maybe "religion" as we've known it needs "destroying"
Is it time to move on to a more evolved way of thinking of God? Has humankind up til now - through organized religion - totally messed up the concepts inspired by God? I'd say humans have gotten it only 10% right and they've taken that ball and run with it - in the wrong direction!
