Kay: Iraq isn't cleared of WMD charges
Kay: Iraq isn't cleared of WMD charges
By John Diamond, USA TODAY
WASHINGTON — Chief U.S. weapons inspector David Kay complained Sunday that initial reaction to his interim report on Iraqi weapons focused too much on the failure to find chemical or biological weapons and not enough on secret laboratories and rocket programs investigators have found.

Meanwhile, the White House said it is reorganizing its efforts to reconstruct Iraq and Afghanistan by creating a Stabilization Group that will be directed by national security adviser Condoleezza Rice.

The move, first reported late Sunday night by The New York Times, will "streamline" decision-making, according to White House officials. It appears to put more of the decision-making in the hands of the White House and less in the hands of the Pentagon.

Democrats have been increasingly critical of U.S. efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, saying the administration didn't adequately plan for the reconstruction of those countries. And as American soldiers have continued to come under attack in Iraq, President Bush's poll ratings have slipped.

3. I guess that's one way of looking at it
Actually, I think the status of UN resolutions on Iraq is such that only UN inspectors can resolve the question. Obviously it's stretching legal principle to think the US can be both prosecutor and impartial judge. How is the world going to overcome this problem since the US won't let independent inspectors back in?

4. Kay last spring on cable news
...as the "terrorism/wmd expert" on cable tv last spring Kay said after three top Iraqi national defense personnel were captured said "If we don't have the weapons of mass destruction within 72 hours, there aren't any."

7. As WJ Clinton put it
Most people when they get into a hole quit digging. The problem with these people is they are asking for a bigger shovel, becuse they know it is down there.

" put more of the decision-making in the hands of the White House"

Whatever decisions are made in the future will strictly be political, with Karl and Andrew running the show.

8. Is it just me or do others see Condi Rice as being

way out of her depth? She's supposed to be an expert on the Soviet Union but the USSR is history now and she doesn't seem to be doing well at extrapolating what she knows about a defunct system to today's reality.
