Regardless of who governs, no lovefest expected in Sacramento

Lynda Gledhill, Chronicle Sacramento Bureau Monday, October 6, 2003

Sacramento -- No matter who is governor after this week's election, he will run head- on into a Legislature that is fractious, demanding and dominated by liberal Democrats.

If Arnold Schwarzenegger takes over, he will find himself confronting skeptical -- and in some cases angry -- Democrats who so far don't believe he has what it takes to to lead the state.

And if Gov. Gray Davis survives, he may have just as difficult a time stopping lawmakers who will want to continue to push their progressive agenda and tax increases.

While voter anger extends to the legislators, it isn't clear whether they get the message, some said. "The Legislature is dysfunctional, in partisan gridlock and unable to answer the problems California faces with common-sense solutions," said Assemblyman Keith Richman, R-Northridge.

The article goes on to say that unless the legislators start representing the people and not some political ideaology, it will sink their parties and the state.
