Bush Still Chief GOP Fundraiser Despite Flagging Polls

By Michael A. Fletcher
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, June 3, 2005; Page A04

ST. LOUIS, June 2 -- President Bush headlined a $2,000-a-plate fundraiser for Sen. James M. Talent (R-Mo.) Thursday night, putting his popularity to the test at a time when his approval rating among voters has plummeted to all-time lows and some of his most important initiatives are struggling to gain traction in Congress.

Bush's appearance at the fundraiser helped draw a crowd of 1,000 supporters to the Millennium Hotel, and the event was expected to raise $1.5 million for Talent's 2006 reelection campaign, said Rich Chrismer, a Talent spokesman.

The first-term senator has been a strong supporter of a wide range of Bush policies, including limits on stem cell research and plans to restructure the Social Security system by curbing future benefit increases for middle- and upper-income workers, while allowing workers to divert a portion of their Social Security taxes into private accounts.

Such stalwart support in Congress is proving elusive for the president less than five months into his second term. His Social Security plan has been stalled by Democrats' solid opposition, deep doubts among Republicans and growing skepticism by Americans quizzed by pollsters. He also has had trouble winning congressional support for his energy policy, emphasizing coal and nuclear power. In addition, John R. Bolton, his nominee to be ambassador to the United Nations, has run into a thicket of opposition in the Senate. Meanwhile, some of his fellow Republicans are defying his calls for limits on federally funded stem cell research.

1. 90% of Americans Can't Afford a $2000.00 A-Plate Dinner
Must less a fundraiser... we'd have to have a fundraiser just to raise the funds to attend something like this.

Tells you whom his real base is. You know, the have's and have-mores.

2. Yet the $2000.- dinner is cheap compared to the tax breaks that
went to the haves and the have-mores. I hear he will be spending a long weekend at his Crawford ranch. Its hard work don't ya know! :)

5. These people profited from his tax cuts
so social services were devestated. They/he have their priorities, after all.

4. He's always been a little rich boy
and dependant on other rich boys. He got his stadium built based on the backs of tax payers at the rich boys command. Much like his war.

7. I'll bet that if you added up all the air miles
that Air Force One has logged hauling this idiot around at 40 grand an hour of taxpayer's money that he could have just as easily stayed in Crawford and shipped big boxed of money to his pals..

All that pollution for nothing, and I'm not just talking about what comes out of the plane's ass.. it's Bush's MOUTH as well..

9. What's REALLY going on during the "SS Tour": two pol. events a day.
Bush gets the US to pay for travel and security to TWO political events, first, the invitation only "town hall meeting" where the town is kept out, and second, the fundraiser in the evening before Bush blows town.

Every day, two political events, subsidized by us.
