Cheney Deflects Calls to Close Gitmo
WASHINGTON - Vice President Dick Cheney said Sunday there are no plans for now to shutter the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay where terrorism suspects are held.

"The important thing here to understand is that the people that are at Guantanamo are bad people," he said.

"I mean, these are terrorists for the most part. These are people that were captured in the battlefield of Afghanistan or rounded up as part of the al-Qaida network," he said in an interview to be aired Monday on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes."

Human rights activists and some lawmakers — mostly Democrats — are pressing for the prison's closure because of allegations of torture and abuse of detainees. President Bush has said his administration is "exploring all alternatives" for detaining the prisoners.

2. Fine
Then it shouldn't be out of the question to produce public hearings and follow the Geneva convention. If we're sure that we've got bad guys, what's the fear in proving it?

4. "for the most part" ...
Interesting spin. Vaguely admits that they aren't all terrorists.

One wonders why the qualifier. Why not just call them terrorists?

Methinks it is a way for Cheney to rationalize himself as not really being a liar while he misleads the public.

8. Republican International Law
Republican Presidential (Bush) law had changed the legal times, for the executive branch had taken over the judicial branch. It has also started making its own interpretations of International Law, which other countries will soon follow by our example. Treaties and International Law made weak, null and void, for convenience, all over the world by American example. American soldiers in civilian clothes or nonmilitary Americans could be imprisoned, without legal council or representation for year after year without legal representation or trail, declared terrorists. The Geneva Convention treaty dissolved from protecting civilians from any form of mistreatment or imprisonment. Can you image no international court system to protect civilians? Treating civilians by using the American example of imprisonment, we have given the world. Can this be fair to United States citizens who travel overseas for pleasure? No, but our diversity, culture, and religious values must set the standard for the rest of the world. To regain the ground lost by impulsive politicians threatening the future of international relations.

18. Cheney: No plans to shut Guantanamo jail
http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2005/06/12/cheney_no_plans_to_shut_guantanamo_jail/

WASHINGTON --Vice President Dick Cheney, reacting to a growing chorus of calls to close the U.S. prison at Guantanamo Bay where terrorism suspects are held, says there are no present plans to do so.

Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida on Friday became the first high-profile Republican to say the administration should consider closing the prison.

"It's become an icon for bad stories and at some point you wonder the cost-benefit ratio," Martinez said. "How much do you get out of having that facility there? Is it serving all the purposes you thought it would serve when initially you began it, or can this be done some other way a little better?"

26. Cheney: No Plans to Shut Guantanamo Prison
By SIOBHAN McDONOUGH, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - Suspected terrorists will continue to be held in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Vice President
Dick Cheney says, amid concerns by some fellow Republicans that the situation may be counterproductive.

"The important thing here to understand is that the people that are at Guantanamo are bad people," Cheney said in an interview airing Monday night on Fox News Channel's "Hannity & Colmes" program.

"I mean, these are terrorists for the most part. These are people that were captured in the battlefield of
Afghanistan or rounded up as part of the al-Qaida network."

The White House, meanwhile, said Monday that all options remain open about Guantanamo Bay's future.
