Schwarzenegger college speech draws boos in California.
By Gina Keating and Jim Christie 46 minutes ago

SANTA MONICA, Calif. (Reuters) - California Gov.
Arnold Schwarzenegger faced down booing, jeering protesters on Tuesday as he delivered a commencement address at his alma mater, where tuition has risen as a result of his budget cuts.

Only a handful of graduates and faculty stood and turned their backs to the stage, but spectators in the bleachers at Santa Monica Community College's stadium kept up a steady and distracting patter of chants and whistles as Schwarzenegger, dressed in a black robe, made his 20-minute speech.

Cheers and applause erupted midway through his remarks as a faculty member rose and held up a sign, referring to the cost of an upcoming special election, that read: "Honor your promise to our children ... $80 million buys a lot of books."

The noise caused Schwarzenegger to pause momentarily but he plowed through to the end, with a smile on his face and without acknowledging the jeers.

The only thing I can say good about Arnold is that, unlike Bush, he will speak before a crowd that isn't purely rightwingers.

39. Corporate power and globalization are behind Arnold
Check out

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=141&topic_id=10924&mesg_id=10925

He shills for the Cato Institute's TABORs (see
www.idtaxreform.com/TABORintro.htm where he is listed as supporting TABORs ) which are a disaster in Colorado where it was enacted in 1992.

He claims multinationals are overtaxed, yet corporate welfare is alive and well in CA as it is all across the US. CA has the 6th largest economy in the world, but can't "afford" to upgrade the basics of government: infrastructure, education and healthcare. Why ? Because too much is being offshored and un-taxed and CEOs like it that way. Joe Sixpack gets the bill at the same time his job is outsourced to Bangalore.

Incomes in the US are stagnant and wives (and now the kids) HAVE to work just to pay the mortgage, which in CA eats up well over half of monthly incomes.

41. Honey, this was the
best acting he's ever done. He made it through to the end without a script person, a director, a makeup person, a dialogue coach, and a first-class cinematographer. And wooden as he is, he still does a better job than the incredibly inept Bush, who can't fumble his way through a series of platitudes and line-readings most third graders would ace.

14. It's a Daily Show reference.
John Cornyn (R-Dumbfuckistan) complained about gay marriage and said that if your neighbor marries a box turtle, it doesn't affect you directly, but it puts that union on the same legal footing as a heterosexual marriage.

They lampooned it on The Daily Show by putting up the graphic illustrating that Heterosexual marriage > Gay marriage > Marrying a box turtle.

19. Oh, NOW the fucking college students are against him?
Fuck all those spoiled ass little shitheads. They are the reason that Ah-nuld got elected in the first place. That was his biggest demographic in the recall election, young college kids, many of them first time voters that flooded the polls and kicked him over the top.

You should have seen the news a couple of weeks before the election. They would be talking to students on campuses, and they all thought that arnie was the man, and just what the state needed.

Now they are pissed off that *gasp* they somehow got hoodwinked into voting against their own interest.

Arnie didn't win with any segment here in L.A. & the westside -- he should have gone to the suburbs for his little speech, or to Orange County.

I would not call your average Santa Monica college student "spoiled." Many community college students work full time while they attend college. USC students are generally from rich GOP families but don't hange that on these students.

21. Grads boo Schwarzenegger
Edited on Wed Jun-15-05 08:01 AM by Ripley
http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/06/15/schwarzenegger.booed.ap/index.html

SANTA MONICA, California (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's return to his alma mater turned into an exercise in perseverance when virtually his every word was accompanied by catcalls, howls and piercing whistles from the crowd.

Schwarzenegger's face appeared to redden during his 15-minute commencement address Tuesday to 600 graduates at Santa Monica College, but he ignored the shouting as he recalled his days as a student and, later, his work as a bodybuilder and actor.

snip>>>

Inside the stadium, the drone from hundreds of rowdy protesters threatened to drown out the governor's voice at times. Many in the crowd erupted in boos when a police officer pulled down a banner criticizing the estimated $45 million cost of the November 8 special election that Schwarzenegger proposed Monday.

snip>>>

Schwarzenegger left the stage almost immediately after his speech, speeding across the infield in a golf cart surrounded by sprinting security guards. Across the field, he pulled up toward a waiting SUV and a large steel gate was closed behind him.

29. Even faculty on stage had signs and turned their backs on him. what a hoot
Channel 9 news reporter Dave Bryan said "Arnold was showered with Boos". They showed footage of audience yelling at him. Several members of the faculty on stage turned their backs while he spoke as did some of the graduates. Two students had "We deserve better" printed on the backs of their shirts.

The faculty also held signs up behind him. One read, "80 million dollars buys a lot of books"....in reference to the cost of a special election.

Did this muscle-bound clown really believe that California would just bend over for him and his corporate sponsors and believe his BS just because he's a famous movie star? Seriously! I was wondering the other day, just exactly what qualifications and experience does Arnold have to hold the highest political office in the state of California?

His running for Governor in a cynical, staged recall election - and somehow winning - was an insult to the intelligence of most Californians who were paying attention. I just wonder when Americans (in general) will WAKE THE F*** UP and stop being led around by the nose with flashy PR and content-free sound bytes.

We have to wise up!

47. It will be harder next time
All the stars in our eyes have been dimmed. It's not to say that he *couldn't* win (or won't), because we Californian's can be insanely stupid and are VERY susceptable to ring wing propaganda. This whole thing, we must recall, was as a result of Davis allowing car registrations to go back up to their normal rate, which meant $300 more out of the average new $20,000 vehicle owner's pocket a year in order to help pay off our $20,000,000,000.00 debt.

Because of $300/year we threw a corporate owned conservative Democrat out of the government and installed a wacked-out Hollywood bad actor moderate Repulibcan so he could heap the $20B on our kids instead of our cars.

Yes, we're that F*cking stupid.

Thank God for the special interests out there actually telling people the truth. Nothing is giving me more satisfaction that watching this @sshole burn. I just hope the dimwits who put him in power do the same.

50. Then watch the GOP scamble for a candidate.
To honest, I think they'd have a better chance w/o Arnie.

49. No quarter
Nail that fucker to the wall. He doesn't go anywhere without getting called on his bullshit. And fuck any of the scum that wants to support him. Invite him to your event and we shut it down.

65. I didn't vote for the Gropenator.
I voted for Cameo but knew that he wouldn't win. He did get the most % of any Green Pary candidate in any state election. With over 100 candidates it was a real circus. Many who voted for the Gropenator are now real sorry about it. He has turned out to be as big of a liar as most Rethugs and is a traitor to the Middle Class, the Working Poor and the Poor. I hope he decides not to run again.
