Congressman John Conyers Writes a Letter to Karl Rove
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Representative John Conyers, Jr., the Ranking Member, on the House Judiciary Committee sent the following letter to Senior White House Advisor, Karl Rove, asking for his resignation:

October 7, 2003

Dear Mr. Rove:

I write to ask you to resign from the White House staff. Recent press reports have indicated that, while you may or may not have been the source of the Robert Novak column which revealed the status and name of a covert operative, the wife of Ambassador Joseph Wilson, you were involved in a subsequent effort to push this classified information to other reporters and give it even wider currency. This itself may be a federal crime, but regardless of that fact, your actions are morally indefensible.

In my view, it is shameful and unethical that an Administration that promised to govern with "honor and integrity" and "change the tone" in Washington has now engaged in an orchestrated campaign to smear and intimidate truth-telling critics, placing them in possible physical harm and impairing the efforts and operations of the CIA.

Recent reports indicate that you told the journalist, Chris Matthews, and perhaps others, that Mr. Wilson's wife and her undercover status were "fair game." Evan Thomas and Michael Isikoff, Newsweek, Oct. 13, 2003. Since these initial allegations have arisen, neither the White House nor your office have denied your involvement in furthering the leak.

For the rest....

5. But the Old Republic is dead, and blowing the lid off an Imperial coverup
is not quite the same as a pResidential coverup.

And where oh where in the whipped-dog Corporate TV Pravda or Democrats would you find anyone to do that anyway.

Plus, they'd wind up crashed in an airplane or with a car rolled over them before they were finished.

Those days when such things were possible are over, my friend.

Over.

6. The community of conscience and understanding
Nicely put, Tom.

The good fight will go on. But we fight under different circumstances, against a triumphant enemy, in a changed nation, with so much looted tradition lying bare around us.

Maybe we'll get our Republic back from the thugs some day. Maybe we won't.

You can be sad and yet still fight.

We can be glad at least for the company of what Edward Said (who knew something about resistance beyond the point of heartbreak) unforgettably called "the community of conscience and understanding."

That's what we have left now - that's our hope.

9. I disagree
This is the way you start things like resignations and impeachments. I think John is right on the mark. He needs to make sure his letter runs in every major newspaper in the country.

13. and
Pressure is coming from many different angles. It is not enough for this administration to hear "independent counsel". Maybe, just maybe, if enough voice start demanding resignations, and independent counsel would look more appealing. Who knows!?!

12. It is the first time I have seen a politician asking for a resignation
from any of the senior administration officials. He is just laying the ground work and opening the door for others to start demanding the same. I say GREAT JOB and hope that other infulential voices start hammering this administration with the same tone!

Honor and Integrity? Yeeaahh Riiight...

10. Go John!
AS an opening salvo, this letter works. Say it another way: This is the Judiciary Committee putting the White House on notice.

This issue is just getting started folks.

15. this fine man is always so eloquent--the type of pol we don't see much
of anymore, he has character and stands on principle.

From the article:

Larger than whether any one statute can be read to find criminal responsibility is the issue of whether officials of your stature will be allowed to use their influence to intimidate whistle-blowers.

16. Nicely ties this situation to the Nixon Administration, too.

Over three decades ago, our nation was scarred by an Administration that would stop at nothing to smear and intimidate its critics.

"Our nation was scarred..."

What are you doing to our nation, dude?
