Iraqis and US debate Turkish troops plan
Wednesday, 8 October, 2003, 13:27 GMT 14:27 UK

Members of Iraq's Governing Council (IGC) are meeting US administrator Paul Bremer to voice their concerns about plans for a large deployment of Turkish troops to Iraq.

The US-appointed council earlier said that they opposed the Turkish move.

<snip>

Anti-Turkish feelings are widespread in Kurdish areas of northern Iraq, where the Turkish military has previously conducted operations against Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) separatists.

But Sunni Iraqis are opposed to Turkish troops, too, our Arab affairs analyst says, as Arab nationalism in Iraq was born in response to the rule of Ottoman Turks in the 19th Century.

And Americans, he says, appear to have once again underestimated the regional sensitivities.

Not a good idea to put troops that have been enemies of the locals for decades ???

JMHO

2. More Dubya idiocy.
It will make the situation worse. 'Regional sensitivities'? How about 'long-standing hatreds'? The Kurds have sought, and fought for, autonomy for much longer than decades.

3. Freedom? Democracy? Where?
We "Liberated" the Iraqis on the premise that they were going to be able to make these decisions themselves.

Shovel some more lies atop the old lies ...
