Rumsfeld Nixes Independent Panel on Gitmo
Rumsfeld Nixes Independent Panel on Gitmo

Sun Jun 26, 4:54 PM ET

WASHINGTON - A new independent investigation of abuse allegations at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, "doesn't make sense," Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Sunday.

Some Democratic lawmakers are pushing for an independent commission to look into conditions at the detention center at the U.S. Navy base in Cuba.

An estimated 540 detainees — most of them captured during battles in Afghanistan — are being held at the base.

Last week, the White House rejected the idea of an independent commission, citing 10 major investigations by the Pentagon.

"I think that to go back into all of the things that's already been reviewed by everybody else doesn't make sense," Rumsfeld said on NBC's "Meet the Press" on NBC.

"But that's not a decision for me. That's a decision for the president," he said.

3. Yeah. Obviously EVERYONE hasn't investigated it if they're refusing
an INDEPENDANT investigation.

Edited on Sun Jun-26-05 07:55 PM by WePurrsevere
the military is usually the one that investigates the military. Can you imagine Joe or Jane Everyday who is a criminal suspect being able to investigate and try him/her self? The whole thing seems to be a huge conflict of interest to me.

Also... if you have nothing to hide what do you have to loose? By not allowing an Independant investigation into Gimo, etc you just come across as even more guilty.

10. How come the defendent
gets to decide whether or not he will be investigated? Someone needs to tell this asshole to shut up and sit down. We will decide who gets investigated.

11. "Already reviewed." "Old news." "Not going to go over old ground."
I'm detecting a theme with this crowd.

Oddly enough, though, 9-11 is as fresh as a newborn puppy.

12. Shouldn't that headline read:
Edited on Mon Jun-27-05 07:59 AM by Jeff In Milwaukee
"Rumsfeldt Nixon's Independent Panel on Gitmo" -- more int he spirit of the denial and cover-up angle of the story.

Nixon: (v) to cover-up, obstruct, or delay justice regarding official malfeasance of office. ex. The President nixoned the efforts of the independent prosecutor.

15. Russert should have asked a simple follow-up question
Russert asked if there should be an independent investigation. He let Rummy respond by claiming there's been 10 (or 11) independent investigations already. Russert should have asked him to name one full and independent investigation that has been conducted.

One fact, Mr. Rummy.

16. Russert was merely following his
pre-approved script. Take everything Rummy says at face value. No follow-ups. Timmy would never risk losing his cushy job at GE by becoming a real reporter.

19. Sorry. I must have had a stroke.
I was temporarily thinking we lived in an actual democracy where the citizenry base decisions on access to facts and office holders tremble in fear at the power of the muckrakers.

What was I thinking?

Why do I get the feeling that these guys were released, shipped back to Afghanistan, told to get out of the truck, and then BLAM shot so that they can make that claim?

The guy who stands to be incriminated for the ill treatment of prisoners is also the one who determines whether an investigation is necessary?

Hmmmmmm...what am I missing here??
