NYT:Bush to Tell Why He Sees 'Clear Path to Victory'(in address to nation)
Bush to Tell Why He Sees a 'Clear Path to Victory'
By RICHARD W. STEVENSON
Published: June 28, 2005

WASHINGTON, June 27 - Faced with polls showing public doubts that the situation in Iraq is improving, President Bush will emphasize in an address on Tuesday night that there is a "clear path to victory" and urge Americans to maintain their resolve, the White House spokesman, Scott McClellan, said Monday.

Mr. Bush will speak to the nation at 8 p.m. from Fort Bragg, N.C., before an audience of hundreds of troops. ABC said it would carry the address live. CBS and NBC said they had yet to decide. Tuesday is the first anniversary of the formal transfer of sovereignty to the Iraqis after the American-led invasion.

Mr. McClellan suggested that Mr. Bush would not signal any change in military or diplomatic strategy. Instead, he said, the president will emphasize that Iraq is making progress despite the mounting loss of life, and that the United States cannot allow the understandable concern about the violent insurgency to deter it from completing the job.

Mr. McClellan said Mr. Bush would "be talking in a very specific way" about his strategy of training and equipping Iraqis to defend themselves while encouraging them to move ahead with the writing of a constitution and the establishment of a stable democracy....

***

Democrats called for more than words from Mr. Bush to reassure Americans that he was being honest about the situation in Iraq and had a realistic strategy. Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the Democratic leader, said Mr. Bush "has got a long list of things he needs to talk to the American people about, and I hope it is substance, not fluff."...

Per the article, he will discuss how we are better equipping the Iraqis. How will that not be an insult to OUR soldiers who don't have what THEY need???

It certainly is convenient. No pesky "free speech zone" has to be set up to keep dissention away from His Royal Heinous.

They'll probably have illuminated signs just off camera that say "Applause. That's an order!"

Timing is everything. Too bad absolutely nothing has changed in the year since the piece of crap scribbled on that piece of toilet paper. Oh ya, the Iraqi oil reserves are depleting and the death toll is up.

7. A clear path to victory
no one else seems to be able to see.

George, that path to victory you see is just the matted down grass before the lemmings went over the edge. And that is exactly where you are taking this country. Over the edge, to its certain demise.

8. so after this clear victory
the war on terra will be over, right? We will have won, correct?

So... we can abolish the patriot act. We can charge or release all detainees under our control or the control of our surrogates all across the planet. We can bring the troops home. The stupid color code can return to green. We can have a big victory parade.

Have I got that right?

32. The Post is no better...
...another cheerleader for the administration. The editorial page has more conservative voices than liberal and with people like Howard Kurtz spinning and spinning and spinning, it really is a pale shadow of what it used to be. Their bias during the Clinton presidency was simply astounding. Remember Sue Schmidt during Whitewater? Not to mention the non-stop pro-war rah-rahing terra terra terra all the time leading up to the invasion of Iraq.

12. Who does he think is still listening? Fundies?
Hell, even the fundies are tired of seeing uncle Bob get sent on his third or fourth tour in Iraq. Hell, uncle Bob was just in the Guard!!

Young Republicans and SUV driving, gun-buying eighteen year olds are not beating down the doors of military recruiters. So who the hell is left who believes this bullshit? We are in desperation land here. Unlike Vietnam, if we lose in Iraq the cost of driving is going to at least triple. The only worse solution is to continue the occupation.

13. "a president who has no foresight, who cannot think properly"
As Bush leads the world down the path of the Valley of the Shadow of Death:

World's most respected statesman Nelson Mandela says,

"What I am condemning is that one power, with a president who has no foresight, who cannot think properly, is now wanting to plunge the world into a holocaust."

"Why is the United States behaving so arrogantly? All that (Mr. Bush) wants is Iraqi oil."

22. New Bush lies can't hurt the war's poll numbers
Even if he tells some new stinkers, it shouldn't matter terribly.

I doubt very much that you can rouse more than 60%-65% of the American public to oppose the war.

Not until there's a draft, anyway.

23. Peace Vigil during Bush's speech in Fayetteville
Edited on Tue Jun-28-05 12:41 AM by Jane Eyre
There will be a press conference at the Quaker House in Fayetteville, home of Fort Bragg, at 1 PM. From 5-9 PM, there will be a peace vigil in downtown Fayetteville during which time there will be a reading of all the names of US soldiers killed in Iraq.

On edit: I forgot to add that these activities are being planned by military vets and families, including Iraq vets. Crossing my fingers that they will get lots of attention, as they certainly should. They have earned the right to speak as no one else has.

24. No such thing as a clear path with so many dead bodies to step over.
Heh heh, I'm your commander in cheese, and -- heh heh, did I say cheese? I meant chief, but, anyway, ya know, cheese reminds me of fondue, and I'm fond of you, heh heh, and fondue is kind of sticky, too, like a quagmire. Heh heh, my poll ratings are in a quagmire, heh heh. Or is that quackmire? Quack, quack, quaaaaack.

He is so putrid.

39. That is not going to go over well.
I grew up in the military and I cannot even imagine soldiers being singled out from their units for a propaganda event. These are units that are supposed to fight and possibly die together, and anything that separates them is undermining their fighting and surviving ability.

If promoting divisiveness in fighting units isn't giving aid and comfort to the enemy, I don't know what it.

41. "Victory" is the disease that keeps on giving (of death and destruction)
That's what he thinks most people want, but he is so devoid of any thinking except campaign spin that he actually tries to synonymize "clear path" with it's brain-dead forebear: "light at the end of the tunnel".

Victory? Fuck victory. How about a victory for decency and morality.

Nice Reid quote. He is like an excellent symphony conductor, knows when to let things play out, knows when to keep up the tempo.
