Eight killed in Mosul attacks
MOSUL, Iraq (CNN) -- Four separate attacks in and around the city of Mosul killed eight people and wounded four others, including two U.S. soldiers.

Wednesday's deadliest attack came when an Iraqi police patrol moving toward western Mosul was ambushed at about 2 p.m. (6 a.m. EDT). Gunmen using machine guns killed seven officers and wounded one.

Also, gunmen ambushed an Iraqi police lieutenant colonel as he was traveling through Mosul with his driver and two other officers. The driver was killed and the lieutenant colonel was wounded in the leg.

He and the remaining two officers fled to a nearby house but were pursued by the gunmen. They fought the attackers, wounding one, and the gunmen fled the scene.

Iraqi police evacuated the casualties -- the dead driver and the wounded officer -- to a hospital before the U.S. military arrived on the scene.
