FilmFest is 'one-woman show'
Donors prefer to remain anonymous

Genie Aldrich: "This is grassroots funded. I'm not going to any grants or out-of-town corporations."

TRAVERSE CITY - The Texas-based American Film Renaissance is sponsoring the Traverse Bay Freedom FilmFest, but founder Genie Aldrich said it is supported locally. AFR's role is to serve as the nonprofit entity through which financial support is being channeled, she and AFR's Jim Hubbard said. Aldrich said she has received donations of money, materials and services from individuals and businesses in Traverse City.

Most want to remain anonymous. The only one she could identify was Knorr Marketing, which she said is donating public relations and marketing services. "I'd say our major lightning rod has been Doug Knorr Marketing, helping set up our logo, our theme," she said. No admission is being charged for those attending the Freedom Film Fest films. Aldrich had estimated the total cost of her festival at $13,000 to $18,000. Donations were between $12,000 and $15,000 as of Friday, she said.

"I have a P.O. box and all of that," she said, adding that all of the money for her festival will come from Traverse City. "I'm only canvassing Traverse City," she said. "This is grassroots funded. I'm not going to any grants or out-of-town corporations." Aldrich has a small committee that calls itself "the heartlanders." It meets weekly to plan, with six joining Aldrich to attend last week. However, she said she's been doing most of the legwork herself.

"Right now it's a one-woman show here except for the crew that is meeting with me every week," she said Friday. Her friend and cofounder Cheryl Rhoads has since arrived from California. AFR's Hubbard is flying in later this week. Aldrich also said she has about 150 people lined up to volunteer.

1. "Most [donors] want to remain anonymous."
I believe that says it all. No one wants to be associated with these whiny losers.

12. I also find that very weird...

I have attended dozens of film festivals over the years and one thing they all have in common is: the donors always want to be front and center. It's free press time, face time and just plain good advertising.

Someone wanting to remain anonymous as to their association to this fest reeks of something really bad. Yes indeed, follow the money.

All festivals if they are non profit, have to have their books audited periodically. And if I remember correctly, since it's non profit, anyone can ask for one.

2. What a fucking moron.
She lived in Los Angeles for 32 years while Moore was born and raised in Michigan and has never lived in "evil" Hollywood.

Her comment about Hollywood films mocking Midwesterners is another RW tactic. I honestly can't recall a movie that did such a thing. It's just another part of the privileged victim mentality.

As for her compatriot, "actress" Cheryl Rhoads, she has a grand total of three acting credits. Yeah, she really set the industry on fire. :eyes:

3. Did you see the film list for their "festival" ??
Here they are:

Whiney little losers. They might get a few dozen people to sit through some of their films, but I don't think they need to worry about extra seating for those sell-out crowds.

:D

4. Good example of their dishonesty

What AFR objects to

Here are the five films of the 31 on the Traverse City Film Festival roster that Traverse Bay Freedom FilmFest co-founders Genie Aldrich and Cheryl Rhoads use as examples of being objectionable:

<snip>

• "Gunner Palace," a documentary following soldiers living in the former palace of Saddam Hussein's son Odai, which Rhoads said emphasizes "the boredom and the endless dreariness of the guys in Iraq. It's like emphasizing the downbeat nature...OK, what else is new? That is part of war. It doesn't emphasize the schools being founded over there, the people's lives, the fact that women can now vote and go to college and all of that stuff."

5. This is my town and this woman's a lunatic
It's a pathetic situation. Moore and friends have put together a wildly successful film festival and this woman is a lunatic who can't stand to see it doing so well. The Wretched Eagle has been giving her so much ink it's ridiculous and they've done their best to paint a sympathetic picture of her.

She lied about where she lived so she could speak/spew at a city commission meeting and now she's putting together an event where no one wants their name known. Note the people funding Moore's effort are all listed on the festival's website.

It's absurd and shows you we have our share of reich-wing, kool-aid swilling morans here in beautiful TC. Ugh.

8. I doubt it will be all that successful except for the older films.
It just doesn't sound like TC. By the way, we're heading up there in a weekend or two. We just love it up there and even considered finding Hubby a job there (but we need to live closer to his family with all their troubles lately). We still talk about it.

9. Here's what you do......
Organize from the surrounding 250 miles. Pack the theatres with sympathetic friends. Then laugh your heads off!

I think we are seeing a tribute to her spirit with this festival.
