GOP Says It Will 'Bury' Name-Calling Candidate

By Dan Balz

Sunday, July 31, 2005; Page A05

Paul Hackett doesn't fit conventional political profiles. He is a Marine Reservist and an Iraq war veteran who opposed the war before the U.S. invasion and remains a harsh critic of President Bush's policy there. He is also a Democrat battling to win a special House election in Ohio in a district that has been in Republican hands for more than three decades.

On Tuesday, voters in Ohio's 2nd Congressional District will elect a successor to former representative Rob Portman, who quit Congress to become U.S. trade representative. Hackett hopes to beat the long odds by defeating Republican nominee Jean Schmidt, a former state representative, by stressing his military service and independence.

Paul Hackett -- an Ohio Democrat, a Marine Reservist and an Iraq war veteran -- has attracted GOP ire by criticizing the president. (By Tom Uhlman -- Associated Press)

-snip-
Hackett told USA Today that Bush's taunting line, "Bring 'em on!" was "the most incredibly stupid comment I've ever heard a president of the United States make." He also told the newspaper that, while he was willing to put his life on the line for the president, "I've said that I don't like the son-of-a- that lives in the White House."

Both the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee have bought TV time for commercials over the weekend. "He called the commander in chief a son-of-a-," said NRCC spokesman Carl Forti. "We decided to bury him."

...... held their vote outcomes until N.E. Ohio (demo strong) vote came in.
Also an unknown liberal black women running for supreme court in Ohio got @ least
50,000 more votes then Kerry in those counties where as the her repug
counterpart got much less then W. So to think that it was clean; democrats
in those counties turned out and voted in record #s for a liberal black women
but voted for a white very conservative male for president .... also Warren called
a terrorist emergency and hid their vote counting from the press .......

Notice that he has gone from "Iraq Veteran Hackett" to "Name-Caller Hackett" in less than a week.

And what's the bullshit about "conventional political profiles"? Let's count up how many Congressional Dems are veterans versus how many Congressional Repubs. "Conventional political stereotypes used by lazy-assed hacks" would be more to the point.

55. I don't have a link to the present Congress. . .
but the 108th (2003-2004) had more Republican military veterans than Democratic: 19 Republicans and 16 Democrats were senators with military experience, while 68 Republicans and 46 Democrats were veteran House members. Of the newly-elected legislators that session, six were Republicans, three Democrats. Even more telling, in some regards, all 10 of the "volunteer-era" veterans who became legislators were Republicans.

If you have more up-to-date info, I'd appreciate seeing it.

113. Thanks for the statistics,
but you've missed the point of my post.

The writer of the original article says Hackett doesn't fit in with "conventional political profiles" i.e. the long-standing GOP smear that all Dems are draft-dodging hippies afraid to serve in the military and therefore are "weak on defense" and shouldn't be allowed to command the nation's military. This is a lame stereotype, as your own statistics hold out. I didn't say there were more dems than repubs, I speculated that there were a significant number of Democratic congresscritters who were veterans. And it turns out there are. Hooray.

Peace.

38. Political dishonesty 101: How to oppose the war without really opposing it
Enough bullshit: let's hear no more about Hackett as an "opponent" of the war. Hackett's for continuing the occupation.

Worse, he demonstrated bad intellectual and moral sense in volunteering to go to Iraq.

When you volunteer for an invasion built on lies, and once there volunteer again to join in the human catastrophe of smashing Fallujah, and then return and maintain that the war must go on, you're no hero: you're a pro-war shill. I don't care what names you call Bush; you're no different to him where it counts.

If Hackett wants to do more than score rhetorical points, let him start supporting immediate withdrawal. Until then, he's an empty suit plugging the same tragic outcome as Republicans: same war, same occupation, different brand name.

58. Hey, Voltaire99, give him a little room and time for growth; he's just
jumped out of the military into politics. And ANY politician who has the cajones to stand up publicly and say, "I don't like that son-of-a-bitch in the White House" is not only moving in the right direction, he puts many other Democrats to shame for their failure to speak frankly and say what the majority in this country is thinking. I like his attitude! And if he can do anything at all to improve the honesty and plain-speaking of other Democratic leaders, to help clean up the utter pigsty of war profiteering that Iraq has become, and to support the best people in government and in the military--the people who believe in lawful behavior, and constitutional government, and have a code of ethics--that will be progress.

We are looking at a fascist coup, and we need to get back to square one: lawfulness. And the right to vote and have our vote counted.

Right now we have NO SAY--and we can't even expect SANE behavior from our government. They are itching to invade or nuke Iran, and will probably try to create some excuse to do so. We're facing a potential Armageddon. Simple sanity and honesty is to be be applauded, even if you don't agree with the guy or disapprove the choices he's made.

I hope his "take no crap" attitude means that he will fight like the devil if they steal it from him. That's what we need to see--people who will take no crap from this evil cabal.

I would like to see him visiting the polling places all day long, and asking questions of election officials, and asking to SEE the vote count, and screaming bloody murder if they try to mess with him.

Given 'em hell, Paul!

64. A Hackett Loss A Republican Pyhrric Victory?
Edited on Sun Jul-31-05 05:34 AM by VogonGlory
Supposing that Paul Hackett loses and the Republicans win? Does that mean a total Democratic defeat? I'm not sure that it does.

I think that the Democrats are beginning to hammer a couple of issues home. We're beginning to educate the voters that at best, the "patriotic" Republicans only give lip service to patriotism and only say that they support the men and women their President and their party send in harm's way.

We're also beginning to educate the public that the Republican Party establishment--all of it, not just Gee Dubya Bush--can't stand criticism. No matter how flawed the policies they implement, no matter that they're screamingly wrong, whenever they're criticized, the Republicans turn around and attempt to destroy anyone who criticizes them.

I may be naive, but I still think that there are still people with a genuine sense of decency on the other side of the aisle, people whose idea of morality doesn't begin and end with who is canoodling with whom how in the bedroom, who are beginning to get disgusted with the candidates they have been voting for. If they can't bring themselves to vote for Paul Hackett, maybe they can be moved to stay home.

72. Hackett has already won in some ways.
He is getting national news coverage, getting his ideas out there, and showing the nation what a real patriot looks like.

From a TV/sound bite standpoint, HAckett blows Schmidt away. He is handsome, charismatic and well spoken. She is kind of creepy. The thugs probably thought it didn't matter who they ran, they had it in the bag. Surprise! Bet they wish they had found a better candidate, now.

in fact, they're terrified of losing in this very republican district, so they've dumped all this money into the race.

But they can't admit their terror, so they've cooked up this cover story about "getting Hackett back" for his remarks.

Hackett has some conservative leanings, but the region is overwhelmingly repug.

The important thing is HE HAS A SPINE AND WILL SPEAK THE TRUTH. For that alone he deserves our help to propel him past the character-assassinating, life-wrecking, lying, thieving pukes who are sure to trump their low-water mark in smearing the man.

Anyone here still have any faith left that america is a democracy?

Shit, Russia has a more democratic system than we do now. Elections are determined by who owns the voting machines.

There's been plenty of coverage on this, but still the sheep graze in their tv pastures, waiting to be led to the slaughterhouse. They deserve everything they will get. I am absolutely disgusted with both America and Americans now. They will get the fascism they voted for.

Will someone suggest an alternate place to live. I'm going to get into some real trouble as angry as I am now.
