Candidates (HACKETT) in final sprint (on Franken&Schultz shows today)

With only hours remaining before the polls open for the special election to fill the vacant 2nd District congressional seat, the candidates - Republican Jean Schmidt and Democrat Paul Hackett - are scrambling to make sure the party faithful make it to the polls.

In a special election in August, with nothing else on the ballot, whoever does the best job getting core constituencies to the polls will emerge victorious because swing voters won't go to the polls, said Alfred Tuchfarber, a professor of American government and elections at the University of Cincinnati...

Both campaigns have been encouraging voter turnout. More than 700 volunteers for Hackett's campaign were working across the district all weekend, said David Woodruff, Hackett's campaign manager.

"We've identified the people we think will vote in this election, and we're going to make sure they do vote for Paul Hackett," he said...

2. Why wouldn't swing voters go to the polls?
That makes no sense at all. They have as much of a stake in this election as any other citizen.

Hackett needs to win. This will send a message across America.

5. It's not so much the "swing" voters...
as the "weak" voters. Some swing voters are absolutely fanatical about voting in each and every election -- whether it's for the Republican or the Democrat depends on the candidate. Other swing voters are "weak" in that they don't show up other than to vote for President or Governor. And even then, many of them don't even vote the entire ballot -- just a couple of the key races at the top of the ballot and that's it.

The key for Hackett is to get out the Democratic and Independent "weak" voters.

8. Special elections don't usually bring out the undecided or "swing"
voters. Vote count is usually really low, so getting out your base can win the election.

Honest! It's the strategy for special elections to do everything you can to get out ALL of your base that you can. That's the most effective way to win.

It pays off much bigger in special elections than regular elections where you have to also convince undecide, swing, or unlikely to vote people.

7. I'm very excited about this election
I did some phone bank work for Hackett over the weekend (I'm on the west coast), and people seem really excited about the election. The Repub candidate is really a turd. I actually heard her say that Hussein wouldn't let inspectors in, something Bunnypants has said, and that just boggles the mind. She has her lips firmly attached to Bush's ass. Yikes. I love Hackett's Libertarian explanation on all subjects she tries to slam him with, i.e., get government out of our lives and out of our bedrooms. It diffuses their moralistic finger-wagging.
