Reaction to Bolton's Appointment to U.N.

By The Associated Press
The Associated Press

-- Reaction to President Bush's recess appointment of John Bolton as ambassador to the United Nations:

___

"At a time when we need to reassert our diplomatic power in the world, President Bush has decided to send a seriously flawed and weakened candidate to the United Nations. It's an unnecessary result, and the latest abuse of power by the Bush White House. ... Bolton arrives at the United Nations with a cloud hanging over his head." _ Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev.

___

"The president did the right thing by sending Mr. Bolton to the U.N. He is a smart, principled and straightforward candidate, and will represent the president and America well on the world stage." _ Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn.

___

"We look forward to working with him as I do with the other 190 ambassadors and we will welcome him at a time when we are in the midst of major reform. I think it is the president's prerogative, and the president has decided to appoint him through this process." _ U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan

___

"The president has taken an action that is fully within his authority, is in concert with a clear majority of the Senate, and is in the interest of achieving constructive reform of the United Nations." _ Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Dick Lugar, R-Ind.

my stomach. It was as if it was the final insult after so many insults.

I really don't understand how this is being tolerated by those in Congress. I had hopes that there were more than a "few" heros left there.

This is serious. This means the BFEE no longer has to pretend that they will not do any and everything to tear our Contitution and form of Government apart.

I have to hope that the Astologers are correct. This appointment during Mercury retrograde will "come apart." We have to hope that somewhere there is someone working for us...because it's out of our hands and the spineless and weak in our House and Senate don't seem to be able to help our heros and patriots like Conyers, Waxman and others.

It's just really a kick in the gut. :-(

26. Oh, oh, KoKo01
I hope you were jesting when you said it was "the final insult." I am sure we have many, many more insults to come from this administration.

Fasten your seat belt....

Bwahahahaha! Kofi Annan's way of saying that Bolton has no more importance than any other ambassador.

Now, that's what I call a diplomat. Here's to you, Kofi :toast:

8. I hate to break it to Senator Frist

The president did the right thing by sending Mr. Bolton to the U.N. He is a smart, principled and straightforward candidate, and will represent the president and America well on the world stage.

It is not possible to represent Bush and America well at the same time. Bush represents narrow constituencies whose interests are at odds with those of the American people, as well as the teeming masses of humanity abroad, and by word and deed expresses ideas alien to the best traditions of American government.

29. Well said, Jack Rabbit
You have put the problem in perspective nicely..

"It is not possible to represent Bush and America well at the same time."

This regime is like a cult, following not the Constitution, the country, or the law, but genuflecting to only their glorious Chimperor.

No one man is above the law, although Caligula Bush surely thinks that he and the law are one and the same.

19. ain't it the truth!
smart, principaled, and straightforward R defined differently in my dictionary and do not, by any stretch of the imagination, include bolton as an example.

Was it scotty that said bolton will represent OUR world view at the UN? OK, I understand that.

20. Maybe we SHOULD be represented by a caveman
Edited on Mon Aug-01-05 12:44 PM by dsewell
I caught a bit of an interview with someone from the Argentinean delegation to the U.N. (if I caught it right--I was running on the treadmill at the gym while the news was on). He said something to this effect: "John Bolton is a very plain-spoken man and he represents the views of President Bush. He has a blunt style that is 'middle American', so we can say that he is a fitting representative of United States views to the United Nations." Translation out of polite diplomatese: you people re-elected a moron, we have to deal with him, so maybe it's just as well that we're dealing with somebody who accurately reflects the arrogant, bullying, confrontational style of your country at the current historical moment.

21. Bush Lectures the World on "Democracy" Yet Dictatorially Ignores Congress
What a resounding message for the U.N. the American dictator has sent: "I'm thumbing my nose at Congress to appoint a man hated around the world to lecture you at the United Nations on how democracy works."

24. It's Amazing
Couldn't release the documents, oh, no, that wouldn't be strong. couldn't wait and wear down the resistance in the Senate, no; time's awasting, there's so much destruction to do and we need Bolton at the UN, raping and pillaging.

Who do they think they are fooling, these neofascists? Do they thinkt hat they will live out their lives in peace and plenty, while ensuring that nobody else does? The world doesn't work that way. The tipping point is within reach now, and it's all going to go splat.
