Bolton Begins Work At U.N. (CBS News)
August 2, 2005 8:40am ET

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2005/08/02/politics/main713338.shtml

(CBS/AP) As he begins his new job Tuesday as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, John Bolton's chief challenge will be to work with diplomats from 190 nations in a place he's called irrelevant as he tries to advance President Bush's reform agenda.

The 56-year-old arms control expert with a reputation for brilliance, obstinacy and speaking his mind will arrive at the United Nations just weeks before a summit in which world leaders will seek to adopt sweeping changes to enable the U.N. to meet the challenges of the 21st century.

"Ambassador Bolton's first day at the U.N. involves presenting his credentials to the U.N. Secretary General, meeting the General Assembly president and getting up to speed on the Iran nuclear threat, which may be presented to the U.N. Security Council as early as this week if talks fail," said CBS News Foreign Affairs Analyst Pamela Falk.

"No one should make prejudgments on reputation," said Chile's U.N. Ambassador Heraldo Munoz. "One must do it on the merit of the facts, when we see what happens here."

1. He's got a lot of time to make up
They're off schedule after all the politics the Dems played.

28. I love other opinions.
But how, pray tell, did the "dem senators" not allow an "up or down vote?"

Voinovich (last I checked, he be a Reep) was dead set against letting Walrus out of committee; he had other Reeps who had expressed serious misgivings about the man.

42. If the Reeps had any faith in this asshole, they would've had Voinovich
on board, by hook or by crook.

It was the Reeps who prevented the "up or down," not the Dems. The Reeps didn't want to have to go on record as having officially supporting Bolton.

so the Coward-in-Chief does a recess appointment. Fine. It only lets the world know that he done spent whatever "political capital" he ever had.

44. 2 questions with followup corresponding questions for you to answer
Why was there no vote? Did Mr.bush call for one?

Why did many congresspeople not want to vote? Did Mr.bush give them the information on Bolton they needed to make an informed choice?

I blame the Administration not the Dem Senators.

Where are the documents by which ALL the Senators could have made informed votes? That's the issue.

Sorry, I don't think your view will go over well here.

But...welcome all the same. :hi:

43. The Republicans are to blame for everything, EVERYTHING.
Edited on Tue Aug-02-05 12:55 PM by Just Me
They are in power, they are in charge and EVERYTHING that has occured over the last 4 1/2 years and will occur while they are in power is COMPLETELY THEIR FAULT.

The Republicans OWN every problem. They own the loss of jobs, the national debt, the increased poverty, a quagmire (the deaths of soldiers and all those who must live with a permanent disability), the increase in international terrorism, the descrease in civil and constitutional rights,...and on and on and on and on!!! THE REPUBLICANS OWN THIS MESS!!! :grr:

46. Repukes also own the media. Which exsists only to blame the Dems.
So we are playing a rigged game. It would be nice if our worthless Democratic leaders would point that out when they do get a rare chance to appear on the GOP media outlets. Of course then they wouldn`t get any appearances on the GOP media. But that might wake up a few more sleeping sheeple.

Storming down the halls of the UN, screaming, red-faced and throwing everyone out of their office windows. It would make a shockingly hilarious and scary animation, if anyone has the free time. I bet his red face shows up really well in contrast with the small albino rodent on his lip.

8. He really looks happy doesn't he.......
....also, the body language of walking into the U.N. not wearing a jacket suggests he is ready for a kick-down drag-out brawl with anyone crossing his path. Can any DU psychologists give any input about Bolton and his apparent short fuse temper?

I have the feeling that Bolton being a non-diplomat will find that the professional diplomats from around the world at the UN who are the best of the best at what they do, will be tough adversaries. I predict that John Bo;ton will exhibit behaviors and out-bursts not unlike those made by the Premier of the former Soviet Union, when Nikita Khrushchev made his wild displays in the UN Security Counsel back in the early 1960's, where he took off one shoe and banged it on his podium.

"If one cannot catch the bird of paradise, better take a wet hen."

35. That's why he's there,
Anything less than capitulation will prove that the US has no place in the UN. If he UN digs in for a fight BushCo.will have achieved victory. This is not about peace or diplomacy. It is about war, lots of it.

Why, how, these insane manics think that an attack on Iran won't have catastrophic repercussions is beyond me. Why they think Iran won't invade Iraq with its ground troops after a US air attack is defies comprehension. Why they think the rest of the world won't attack the US mainland is is just impossible to understand.

How could they have separated themselves so far from reality?

Bolton was appointed just in time - to get predictions about when Iran will go nuclear moved up to something more consistent with administration's statements. And just in time to start the sanction process, because we can't wait for the first sign to be a mushroom cloud ya know.

41. Now scroll up and take another look at his face.
(I know, it's hard). See the eyebrows? They're wrinkled. His walrus-mouth is turned down. He's worried. Super-worried.

He's afraid he won't be able to get anything through the UN because he's radioactive right now. The Dem's managed to make this man the focus of much negative attention (and deserved!).

He probably won't be able to accomplish crap while he's in the UN, other than attract LOTS of attention to himself.

No more SKELETONS, John!

47. I don't think he's worried about drawing attention...
The neo-cons are in a win-win situation with Bolton.

If he does somehow manage to accomplish anything 'positive', their agenda is advanced, and they can say, "See, we told you he was a good choice!"

If he fails to get anything done, or is mocked and reviled, they will say, "Gosh darn it! We want to work with the UN, but they're just a bunch of corrupt meanies! We'll have to go it alone!"

My personal opinion is that they really, really want option two. They want to weaken any and all ties between the US and the international community, especially the UN.
