Bush stands by beleaguered friend Palmeiro in steroids scandal
http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/afp/20050802/en_afp/baseballusadoping_050802171758

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US President George W. Bush has defended his longtime friend Rafael Palmeiro -- the professional ballplayer suspended this week for using performance-enhancing drugs -- saying he believed Palmeiro's assertions that he never intentionally used steroids.

"Rafael Palmeiro is a friend. He testified in public and I believe him," Bush said in a newspaper interview published Tuesday in several Texas newspapers.

"He's the kind of person that's going to stand up in front of the klieg lights and say he didn't use steroids, and I believe him. Still do," the US president said.

Bush's friendship with Palmeiro dates back to the early 1990's when he was a managing partner for the Texas Rangers and Palmeiro a player with the team.

Palmeiro, is one of several professional athletes who testified under oath before a US congressional committee that he had never taken steroids....cont'd at link.

31. Don't forget standing by Rumsfeld during Abu Ghraib
here's an example:

Stay with CNN-USA for frequent updates on the Bush administration's show of support for Donald Rumsfeld, and for a look ahead at Tuesday's testimony on the Hill by Maj. Gen. Antonio Taguba, who wrote a U.S. Army report on abuse of prisoners in Iraq.

The White House stands "strongly" behind Tom DeLay amid ethical questions over the House majority leader's fund- raising and overseas trips, deputy chief of staff Karl Rove said Monday.

This gang will stick by any friend slash contributor. That the steroid test was positive is irrelevant, only that the guy testified in public and Bush "believes" him. Then they will chide liberals for being the ideology of no responsibility for their actions, blah blah.

24. Is this sports related?
I'd say, yes. That means it belongs in the sports forum, not LBN. Otherwise, you just glorify the opinions of Bush, Jr., by trying to make this news.

You seem to be impressed by Bush's opinions in this regard by elevating this story far beyond its importance.

Put it in sports where it belongs and where the rest of us can ignore it. Some of us don't care a fiddler's fart about the comments of either Bush or his baseball buddies. From any angle, it's trivial. It's a media diversion from the real news. The more importance you place on this story, the more I'm inclined to believe you don't understand what news is. No sports news is news, unless you've misplaced your priorities.

Cheers.

This could go easily evolve into a story about what Shrubbie knew was going on in his baseball days and put him in a rather difficult position with his posing about being tough on steriods.

39. Yeah, I know...
... but I tend to click on LBN threads regarding Bush first, just to find out what he's saying. When I find out that I've wasted my time on meaningless drivel about sports (which some people here think is really important, even if it's Bush talking about it), I'm annoyed.

Hitler probably liked football, too, but his interest in that sport doesn't quite compare with news of the invasion of Poland, does it?

*sigh*

I worry, too, about people whose interest in sports too easily diverts them from the main points of life today.

Bush talking about sports is a diversion from what he's actually doing.

That's worrisome. And people who put his comments on sport as important news is worrisome, too.

Cheers.

Honest to God....this could be it!!! Saw a poll today where 90% that this baseball player was a lying sack of shit about not knowing he "did" steroids and only 10 believed. Then they have da' man in da' White House says "I believe him". Now, maybe every Limbaugh-listening, dumbassed, beer swilling, jock will see the light and might even have one brain cell fire and say "jeeees, maybe he did lie us into Iraq...maybe he is lying about loving us common people, etc.". I mean it was just six steps beyond assinine for the idiot in the White House to say this. He's so drunk on his own power that he thinks that if he 'says so' the people will believe. Not this time, honey 'cause you stepped right into the kind of garp that fills their little minds.

So, we are to believe that the guy who is the spokesman for a performance enhancing drug - VIAGRA, does not take performance enhancement drugs!

69. I think this is very interesting news.
I never watch ESPN, so wouldn't have known about this. Look at these very Bush-like excerpts from the article:

...Palmeiro, is one of several professional athletes who testified under oath before a US congressional committee that he had never taken steroids.

But the Cuba-born first baseman is the seventh player and first star to receive a steroid ban under a new policy agreed upon by owners and the players' union earlier this year -- one that was harshly criticized by the US Congress as being too lax.

In a statement released Monday after the suspension was announced, Palmeiro changed his claim to say he never "intentionally" has taken steroids...

Seems there was enough evidence to suspend him, yet Bush sides with Palmeiro, not the investigators.

I hope a lot of people watch ESPN.
