Poland apologizes for damage troops inflicted on Babylon
http://www.azzaman.com/english/index.asp?fname=news%5C2005-08-02%5C10470.htm

The Polish government has officially apologized for the widespread and in cases irreparable damage caused to ancient Babylon by its troops.

The apology was delivered during a meeting which brought together Iraqi Culture Minister Noori al-Rawi and his Polish counterpart in Baghdad.

The sides signed a cultural agreement under which Poland will help the country with archaeological excavation and preservation of ancient items.

“The apology was made during the talks,” Rawi said.

He did not say whether Iraq has accepted the apology and whether the Polish authorities had agreed to pay for the damages.

2. The US started building a huge military base
on an archeological site that includes tablets and ruins that date back 10-15,000 years.

At least the Poles apologized. Rumsfeld was quoted in Al Jazeera as saying "Stuff happens" and refused to move the base 1/2 of a kilometer.

The current curator of the Baghdad Museum came to Chicago and described the theft, desecration and damage done because Rummie refused repeated requests to safeguard the property. For a week, he and his fellow workers watched in vain as the ancient national treasures, including several thousand silver tablets, dating back 9,000 years were stolen. Wht they could not steal, they broke.

3. Barbarians. When your actions make Iraqi past governments
look good, you have touched rock bottom.

4. It never ceases to amaze me that.....
There are those in this country who would impose Constitutional protections for the American flag, which can be reproduced by the millions, and then destroy ancient, historical relics. To those who would say the Flag needs to be protected for what it stands for, I say you should spend less time protecting the Flag and more time protecting what it stands for; No more torture, No more indefinite detentions without judicial review and NO racial profiling for terrorists (among other things)! Sorry about the .

It is nice to see that Poland doesn't suffer the same malady as Bush, in that they can think of a mistake they made and admit to it! I feel a little better now.

5. Nothing from the U.S., natch
And I wouldn't suggest that the Culture Minister hold his breath waiting for a similar apology from the U.S.

6. Pre-2000, that would have seemed an impossible headline.
What Science Fiction madness has overtaken the world? It's like a Philip K. Dick novel come to life.

Man, what a long, bad trip!

7. Nothing in Polish media
There's nothing about that in Polish media, but also no other English-language sources that I can find. This is not to say it can't be true - accusations against Polish troops have repeatedly been made, always denied by the brass. I'll forward this to a couple newspapers here in Poland.
