Writers Group Won't Give Judith Miller 'Conscience in Media' Award After All

Judith Miller

NEW YORK The board of The American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) has voted unanimously to reverse an earlier decision to give its annual Conscience in Media award to jailed New York Times reporter Judith Miller, E&P has learned.

The group's First Amendment committee had narrowly voted to give Miller the prize for her dedication to protecting sources, but the full board has now voted to overturn that decision, based on its opinion that her entire career, and even her current actions in the Plame/CIA leak case, cast doubt on her credentials for this award.

The group's president, Jack El-Hai, posted an explanation on an internal list-serve yesterday, noting the opposition from the rank and file, and also mentioning two other reasons for the unanimous vote:

* “A feeling that Miller's career, taken as a whole, did not make her the best candidate for the award”

1. Why did it take so long for them to figure it out?
DUers have known this for years now.

2. How could anyone think she deserved this award in the first place?
With the type of "sources" she uses, and her embarassing "journalism" on the WMDs she was not better than a reporter for the National Review.

27. That's funny. In the 60's I ask this guy how he met his wife.
He said she was standing at Hollywood & Vine with a mattress on her back and it was love at first sight.

If that distinction didn't have Jeff Gannon as the heir apparent.

4. This is GREAT news!
At last a group of journalists are abandoning that weird notion that Judy has the right, as a reporter, to conceal a crime! Now, if only the MSM will actually report on this news and get some knowledgeable people to explain the decision. ..."A feeling that Miller's career TAKEN A WHOLE did not make her the best candidate for the award..." Wow. An indictment in itself!
Thanks! You've cheered me up a little.

I hate it when people keep getting rewarded for lying and cheating. I guess they figured it out after a few more grand jury subpeonas.

12. The media is so self serving. THere is so little questioning of her
possible ulterior motives.
Thankfully there is some (huffington post and a few other columns.)
She is part of the neocon team and probably participated in the smear, probably traded info for access. Tit for tat. No MSM sources discuss that. Its not protecting sources. Its MSM right to trade info with impunity. The elephant in the room that no one is talking about.

I've been pretty unable to speak to my journalist friends about this. They're adamant that sources must be protected at all costs. And both of them are quite liberal and hate *.

14. Someone tell Richard Cohen she's making news, not writing it.
Cohen doesn't seem to read his own paper about her searching for WMDs with troops, giving soldiers orders they had to follow and pinning decorations on soldiers afterwords. Doesn't sound like a 'reporter' to me, but someone with a very large stake in finding WMDs.

16. A unanimous reversal?
Wow. Either the original decision was a knee-jerk reaction to her imprisonment, which is a good possibility, or someone along the line got a phone call and a little documentary proof about Judith Miller's dedication to professionalism or lack thereof.

Oh well, Judith. At least you're still the Fucking Queen of All Iraq. They can't take that self-bestowed title away from you.

22. I'll be cynical here
And state that no one is opening their eyes in this case. What is happening is that everyone is realizing in the world of journalism that the other shoe hasn't dropped in the case of Miller. They don't want to give an award to someone that is later revealed to be knee deep in what amounts to the most egregious violation of the public trust and abuse of government powers. Miller is more than a mere shill for the White House. She is an outright propagandist that takes pride in her position and status that offensive job brings.

This is far from over with Miller. There's a whole slew of things that need to be covered up, which will require even further abuses of power. It's going to get real interesting. Hold on.

All that crap about the court decision ruling against Miller having the effect of compromising free speech and the integrity of journalism, won't pass the mustard test when all the pieces are put together ... and they will be put together sooner or later.

36. Wow, a UNANIMOUS vote to reverse the decision - once again, the rank&file
made a visible differrence.

Judith Miller is no good example of anything but greed and overreaching ambition trumping any trace of ethics.

She's in jail now and loudly stating that she'll never tell anything to anybody because she knows it would be her death warrant, I believe. She knows some damaging stuff about the Bushies and they play rough.
