Bush calls on Congress to pass Social Security reform

Gary Martin
Express-News Washington Bureau

GRAPEVINE — Fresh off a string of legislative victories, President Bush on Wednesday called on Congress to pass Social Security reform, make tax cuts permanent and overhaul immigration laws when it returns to Washington after its month-long recess.

“I hope Congress gets a good rest, because they've got a lot of work to do when they get back," Bush told a national group of state lawmakers and business leaders here.

The president also paid tribute to U.S. soldiers killed during a recent spate of violence in Iraq, saying the American troops died a “noble cause and a selfless cause."
(snip)

It is the 49th trip the president has made to Texas since he was first elected in 2000.

1. I wonder how, or if, this one can be stopped
DLC defectors... so much for a party-line vote. Well, the Republicans will naturally march in lockstep, but the Dems will just roll again.

If only we could recall these bastards when they vote against our interests.

3. Reform. Um hmmm. We've seen this reform before.
This will be the stealth method of "reform" that we've become so accustomed to seeing from them. The people have rejected his grandiose plan to steal their Social Security. So all sorts of ugly things will get deeply embedded in some 1700 pages of a Social Security "reform" act a la Medicare drug reform and energy reform. Then the propaganda will drown out even Aruba. Congressional arms will be twisted. Bribes will take place. The vote will be held open.

No one will ever actually read it till it is made public AFTER it has become law. Bush will get what he wants, and no one will be aware of all that is in there until it's too late and Social Security is gone. (Golly, gee I wouldn't have voted on it if I had known it said THAT.)

It's being written even as we speak.

Can we hire someone to read and explain this stuff to the Dem (and even the Repug) congresspeople before they vote on it?

Wat

8. RE: Put down the pipe...
Looks like Bush has re-started his drug habit if he thinks his Social Security program ideas will pass in Congress with elections looming large in 2006....

12. He's out of his goddamned mind....No one, not even a brain-dead,
lockstep-marching republican, will touch his crazy Social Security
Scheme. They know that if they do, it's the death knell for their political careers.
What TRULY baffles me is that Lil' Boots doesn't seem to grasp that it AIN'T gonna happen. It's as though he lives in some alternate universe...one where he actually WON two elections, and has the support of the American people?!?
