Qaeda says Islamic sharia must be only law in Iraq
DUBAI (Reuters) - Iraq's al Qaeda group said on Thursday that Islamic sharia law should be the only legislation to govern the country, according to an Internet statement.

No human being is allowed to legislate laws which are the right of God alone," said the statement posted on a Web site frequently used by the al Qaeda organization in Iraq.

Major sticking points which have divided drafters of Iraq's new constitution along sectarian and ethnic lines include the role of Islam and how power and resources will be distributed in a federal state. Some Iraqis want Islamic sharia to be the basis of the constitution.

The head of the committee drafting the constitution told parliament on Monday that a draft of the document would be ready by an Aug. 15 deadline.

1. F you - you wimps. Sharia law will be an option in Canada soon. Why?
Because we have balls and are willing to try it out if both parties agree.

7. like I said - one must be brave to try that one on. The point made in
Ontario is that it is happening anyway.

9. Yes. Muslims will still fall under the criminal code of Canada. They
cannot opt out of that. And both parties have to be in agreement.

10. Yes, both parties have to agree. But...
if they're not in agreement (like if their local version includes articles that give unequal rights favoring men over women)?

11. Then the woman can get a divorce and carry on her way. She may

not get to stay in her local church. Or the husband can get a divorce and be on his merry way. He may not get to stay in his church. Happens all the time. Up to the church. Or the church may care less than the wife or the husband and both get to stay. Or - instead of going through a divorce they could divorce on the cheap under Sharia Law in week one. And then file the legal papers.

As to custody...that will fall under family court unless the couple can agree.

12. Well, if Muslins get enough supporters to change the unanimous
vote, or another political party than the Liberal, the PQ, or the ADQ in power with a favorable platform to their agenda, they will probably get it passed, or all the way through the SC if they want to try that route (in which case, the derogatory clause could be invoked re: again, the vote was unanimous).

It may take them quite some time (like I wrote).

13. You cannot legislate against one religion. You can negotiate. But
like I said...both parties have to agree. And of course it has to pass the legislature.

But I am not an expert. And obviously much of the old sharia law goes against the criminal code. And like I said - it is taking place in some situations anyway. And other religions & cultures have tribunals with judges that judge family issues.

14. So, if I start a new religion and have my judges do whatever
I want, I could negotiate forever with the Liberal government (what's good for one is good for all).

Cool. ;-)

16. Islam is not a new religion. We have tribunals set up for lots of cultures
And it is happening anyway. Why not give them some money to do family courts work (if they both agree) and in return have more say in situations where everything goes wrong and family or criminal court has to step in.

Sharia law is blatantly anti-woman.

It rocks, 'cuz it supports all manner of "extremism".

We could be at war for centuries!

4. A "federal state?" Sounds like a theocracy to me
Edited on Thu Aug-04-05 08:50 PM by rocknation
Not that the Bush empire would be offended by that. Yes, it would make a complete mockery of their attempting to establish a democracy. But I don't think they'd mind establishing a Christian theorcracy here.

is erected in place of that Sadam Statue.

18. Similar things are already
done in the US Courts today through a process of prenumptual agreements and religious courts taking on the role (legally) of aribtrator.

Many Orthodox Jewish marriges are done in this matter, and even some less religious marrages are. On the whole, I think its probably acceptable, and obviously a prenump provding for binding arbitration by the local Biet Dien in the case of alimony, divorce, child support, and custody requires the signatures of both parents. One other note -- every agreement I've ever heard of allows DHS to intervene in a custody battle and force it to the Chancellor, but otherwise the Biet Dien has jurisdiction.
