Oregon House Republicans Deflate Riley's Effort To Stop "Golden Parachutes"

Salem, Oregon - The House Republicans rejected an effort by Representative Chuck Riley (D - Hillsboro) to restrict huge bonuses and benefits, commonly called "golden parachutes," that some school districts pay to administrators when their contracts end, Riley's office announced Tuesday.

Riley offered a motion to withdraw Senate Bill 766 from the House Education Committee in order to let House members approve a limitation on the amount of salary and benefits that a school district, an education service district or a public charter school may pay an administrator at the end of his or her contract.

The bill would have restricted such a payment to 25 percent of the salary and benefits paid to the person in the prior school year. The bill would also have prohibited providing retirement benefits to administrators that are not available to other employees.

While the Senate had passed the bill earlier in the session, The Republican House majority killed Riley's motion.

1. Between this and the predatory payday loan business...
It's prettty easy to see who's buttering the Oregon Repubs' bread, isn't it? So, can Oregon afford this?

2. No. Oregon is as broke as any other state.
There's nowhere near enough money for schools, and the Oregon Health Plan has been cut down repeatedly. But I guess the Repugs find those trade-offs to be morally righteous.

4. Eh, you get what you* vote for....
... and it sounds like Oregon's legislature is majority Republican. (Which I find surprising. I guess Portland's demo doesn't extrapolate...)

* Unfortunately, though, one gets what the plurality votes for.

3. We're paying out one now. Guy served 2 years of his five
year contract, but somehow we still owe him $200,000? I know many school districts would call it chump change, but's it's huge for our small district.

Why should he get paid for not working? What a scam.

5. Why is he leaving?
If it was his choice, then it's total nonsense. In fact, if he's leaving before the natural expiration of his term, he should owe the district an early-exit penalty.

Of course, it's all controlled by what's in the contract, regardless of how ridiculous the contract may be.

7. make these issues for 2006
I find the lack of local politics coverage in Oregon as the cause
for these people getting a seat on congress.

If these sorts of stop the theft efforts are known, I would imagine the heat would turn up and these cats who block any effort to stop these outrageous ripoffs, in a state that is having serious budget problems, would get kicked out.

As it stands few even know how their representatives are, never mind
what they are doing.

8. That's Oregon for you.
Two little oases of liberalism floating in a sea of rednecks who send their most presentable inbreeds to congress.
