Newsweek Poll: Bush’s Battle (61% disapprove on Iraq - up 7pts in a month)
Aug. 6, 2005 - As U.S. troops endured a deadly week in Iraq, 61 percent of Americans polled say they disapprove of the way President George W. Bush is handling the war in Iraq, according to a new NEWSWEEK poll. Thirty four percent say they approve. This is Bush’s lowest rating on Iraq and the first time it has dropped below 40 percent in the NEWSWEEK poll. And 50 percent of those polled say the United States is losing ground in its efforts to establish security and democracy in Iraq; just 40 percent say the U.S. is making progress there.

A NEWSWEEK poll taken one month ago showed that 41 percent of Americans approved of Bush’s handling of Iraq; 54 percent did not.

While 26 percent of those polled say they support keeping large numbers of U.S. military personnel in Iraq for as long as it takes to achieve U.S. goals there, 38 percent say they would support keeping troops there less than a year, 13 percent say one to two years and 12 percent volunteered that troops should be brought home now.

Meanwhile, Bush’s approval ratings have dropped to 42 percent; 51 percent of Americans say they disapprove of the way Bush is handling his job as president. Bush’s approval ratings reached a high of 88 percent in his first term, in the month after the September 11 attacks. Forty-two percent is his low.

24. I'm a red stater
and I do wonder about our IQ. What is happening is that we here in the red states have to work so hard for our dime that we don't have time to watch tv, read the papers which are slanted. I have a son that is so busy trying to live like the rest of the world that he truly doesn't have time to know what is really going on. I do remind him that shit is still going on with the repubs that Will Matter to him. But, he does vote democrat even tho he doesn't keep up with the world affairs. Those that think the repubs are smart and looking after their well being are hopeless. They hear "tax breaks, religion, etc." and skip off on their merry way. The only thing that appears to keep Okla. above water is energy. Apparently they don't understand the real issues about interest rates, soldiers dying, rights taken away, that we are losing the ability to protect our rights when it comes to products liability suites, errant doctors who chop off the wrong leg and the insurance companies that say that there are frivolous liability cases against doctors. when the truth is there are not that many doctors that are accused of wrong doing. The insurance co. are reaping this false benefits from the fear they spread among the congress through the lobbyist (insurance, pharmaceuticals, etc.)

In other words, we may not be all that dumb but are willing to buy into the bs that with tax breaks, low interest and moral issues (queers are bad, evil, the devils doings; preach christianity in schools and anywhere they choose; athiest are a product of satan and will go stright to hell and that we should all be careful to not listen to people that don't follow scripture, we have been possessed. Amen

37. well said. People carelessly
vote against their own self-interests, as you've listed.
Hate-radio has done an excellent job skewing the debate. We aren't getting our message out as well. Maybe that's changing. We're facing amazing odds: corporate America cash fueling rightwing policy which undermines the rights and standard of living of average Americans. Our legislators are owned by PACs. Our CEOs earn, on average, $30 million a year. Yet our politicians are giving corporations "tax incentives" while giving us paltry tax rebates as though we're little children getting penny candy from kindly old Grandpa.
America is becoming a plantation. And we're supposed to be damn grateful for whatever meager rewards Big Daddy hands out when he's in a generous mood. With our money.
Another DUer posted a quote the other day which really sums it up: "It's not that the people don't know anything. It's just that so much of what they know is wrong." Mark Twain.

9. "12 percent VOLUNTEERED that troops should be brought home now."
That's a HUGE number for a poll that didn't offer that answer as a canned option. Folks polled rarely go 'off script' and choose an answer not listed.

if they had a follow-up interview to the 34% of the respondents who "say they approve".

Who are they? Are they driving Jaguars? What's their age group? Their education level? Any kids?

I would LOVE to be a fly on the wall of those opinion polls.
