US warns Iraq Shi'ite Islamists not to impose will
http://today.reuters.com/news/newsArticle.aspx?type=worldNews&storyID=2005-08-06T185525Z_01_N06257820_RTRIDST_0_INTERNATIONAL-IRAQ-DC.XML

US warns Iraq Shi'ite Islamists not to impose will
Sat Aug 6, 2005 2:55 PM ET

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The United States' envoy in Iraq delivered a
warning on Saturday to Shi'ite Islamist leaders, propelled to power by
U.S. forces, not to use a new constitution to impose discriminatory
laws by majority rule.

A day after talks between Iraq's Shi'ite prime minister and its top
Shi'ite ayatollah had revived fears among Sunnis and Kurds of an
Iranian-style Islamic state, ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said
Washington insisted a draft constitution due out this month must
respect equal rights for women and minorities.

It was a clear public signal of U.S. determination to steer the new
Iraq after months of behind-the-scenes negotiation.

On the eve of a much-anticipated meeting of Iraqi leaders that aims to
break the deadlock on key issues, including the role of Islamic law,
the U.S. envoy said in a statement he had met -- unnamed --
representatives of religious and ethnic minorities:

"I assured them that the United States believes strongly that the
Iraqi constitution should provide equal rights before the law for all
Iraqis regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion or sect ...
There can be no compromise."

1. Oh, A Warning, THAT Will Solve That Problem!
Glad they nipped that in the bud, because if it's anything that motivates religious extremists to really mellow out it's a warning from the "US envoy!"

God...what a fucking mess.

17. well,
ensuring that minority rights are respected - in spite of majority rule - is very needed in a democracy. I can't help wishing that the Iraqis - if - they create a constitution - insure minority rights. And this is regardless to what degree the process is influenced by the US. Just to get the concept out there and give it some validity helps promote it whether enacted now or later.

18. Backward here.
Here majority rights are being suppressed by a minority of bible thumpers.

Is how I see it.

14. You're so right, Pun.
I have to laugh a little bit when I read stuff like this.

An Occupier, imposing Democracy, on a little fledgling, neophyte government. With hand-picked leaders, doing their masters' bidding?

As Bush stands up on the podium, trying to be his sincere best. Tries to be believable, as he spouts on and on about "democracy", "Dem-awkwracy", "DEM-AWK-RUCY" for Iraq.

As he stands there, swiping his fist in the air, with spit flying out of his mouth, the world watches. And wonders what drugs he's on.

6. Democracy is what your Overlords say it is. . .
and not what you want.

How naive, the Iraqi people, to hold that their beliefs and desires amount to anything under their new democracy. This foolishness must be stifled immediately, else they develop the idea the "autonomy" they were given by their Overlords means they have a say in their affairs.

8. Wow, wow, wow... the idiot neocons just realized...
they charged hundreds of billions on the taxpayers' credit card, murdered tens of thousands of innocent people, maimed & "sacrificed" thousands of troops while feeding them with dirty rotten expired food, and for what? To end up with having to deal with a new democratically elected government that is the best friend of Tehran!!

HOW MORE MORAN CAN THEY BE??

12. Got it!
I have a feeling many on this site are all tipsy today as I am. No holds barred. Gawd this is all soo awful and there is nothing we can do. This crowd has all the money corners covered and money is our government. Nothing makes sense and we all go crazy wondering how this happened to our precious country.

10. What did we expect?
Or should I say, what did this admin expect? Of course the Shite would rule,! they are the majority. Nothing like planning ahead. Some governments don't seem to look into the future. Oh yeah, they saw us putting Chalibi in the position of power and do our (their) will. Iraq and the U.S. citizens are fu-ked. So much for a brilliant administration, we ain't got one. And our dem. congress are pitiful, period.

sooo, more of our dear troops will bite the dust and bush will say how he is PRAYING for us all. Wake up America! Now, only the choir is here, just had to vent.

...reason #4 for the invasion of Iraq? So, let's take inventory:

1. Imminent nuclear threat: nope
2. Weapons of mass destruction: Uh uh.
3. Weapons of mass destruction program: Sorry
4. Spreading of freedom and democracy: 'fraid not.

Christopher Robin got up in the morning,
The sneezles had vanished away.
And the look of his eye seemed to say to the sky,
“Now, how to amuse them today? ”

21. Friday's Child, you left one out...
They had a Weapons of Mass Destruction Program related activity, I think. Also, Saddam was a bad, bad man, and he tortured his own people. What? We're torturing them, too? Well, that's different. They aren't our own people.

The reasons changed with every breeze, and every reason was a lie. None of them can talk without lying. They make me sick.

15. The neocon asshats are crapping their drawers
And have been ever since the January elections in Iraq, when they failed to jigger the outcome to their liking. Their solution? Overthrow the government of Iran. Our country has fallen into the hands of dangerous, psychotic idiots.

16. I love this part...

"I assured them that the United States believes strongly that the
Iraqi constitution should provide equal rights before the law for all
Iraqis regardless of gender, race, ethnicity, religion or sect ...
There can be no compromise."

Hey Guys, it doesn't matter how 'strongly' you believe something, that doesn't make it reality. -- oh, thats right, they think that it does.

They just don't understand why the shia's won't follow the pnac plan.

Of course, its probably because here, if they say it often enough and loud enough, the morans do think its true.

Oh yeah, "there can be no compromise", wow, there's a message. I think that the shia's and the US are on the same page on that one anyway.
