Canadian man sentenced for illegal entry to visit dying mother
BANGOR, Maine — A Canadian man who entered the country illegally to visit his dying mother in Massachusetts was sentenced Friday to a year and a day in prison for illegally entering the United States after he´d been deported.

Joseph Russell Taylor, 47, of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, was sentenced Friday in U.S. District Court.

Taylor´s attorney, Stephen Smith of Bangor, asked Judge John Woodcock to sentence his client to the eight months he had been held at the Piscataquis County Jail awaiting resolution of his case.

Assistant U.S Attorney James McCarthy, who prosecuted the case, recommended the sentence the judge imposed.

2. There are lotsa Canadians here abooooooot
Me, NH, VT and MA have always had close relations with that chunk of Canada. Crap like this is gonna ruin a beautiful relationship, sadly.

He could very well be the product of a cross border marriage, with a CA father, and was born in CA. He would not automatically have US citizenship unless his mother was there on official government business--you have to apply for it in tourist or "living abroad" situations. No application, no citizenship...

Or it could be his mother took US citizenship later in life...

3. Yeah, too bad about the
drug charge but hopefully his life will be straightened out..he did a good thing.

We have people from Nova Scotia living in our small town in New York. Brilliant people.

4. Unlike a terrorist this man answered a call of love, want is wrong w/ judg
Love of a mother should be acknowledged and honored by all not punished. This woman gave this man his life, so help him for showing this type of respect for this woman, his mother.

5. Canada looks the other way when Bush visits, despite his
criminal record. This poor man should have been extended a similar courtesy.
