China approves human trials for new SARS vaccine

BEIJING (AFP) - China has approved a new vaccine for the pneumonia-like disease Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome ( SARS) to go through human trials, state media reported.

The vaccine, developed by a Beijing-based inspection and quarantine body, was created in October and is undergoing clinical trials, the China Daily said Saturday.

Tests on monkeys at Wuhan University in central China's Hubei province proved successful, the paper cited an official surnamed Dong with the Beijing Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau as saying.

1. Why on earth do they need a vaccine for SARS??

They know that it got into the human population by eating bush meat (civits) and now the epidemic is over. If they want to avoid SARS in the future they should continue to avoid eating civits. Sheesh.

SARS is the human analog of Feline Infectious Peritonitis in cats. Our experience with a vaccine in this disease has not been a happy one. FIP is not caused by the virus per se, but rather by the immune system OVERREACTING to the virus. So a vaccine is actually not helpful in the case of FIP.

If I am not mistaken, SARS is caused by a coronavirus just like FIP is, and the people who died of SARS died because they developed immune-mediated vasculitis. Trust me...........if this is the case, the vaccine will prevent nothing and maybe even exacerbate the disease if the people get exposed.
