Families Learn of Recruiters' Lists -- and How to Opt Out
http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-recruit7aug07,1,7758845,print.story?coll=la-headlines-california

As the military struggles to meet recruitment goals, activists are intensifying efforts to educate parents about how they can delete their teenagers' names from directories that schools are required to provide recruiters under the federal No Child Left Behind Act.

Their message is simple: All parents or students have to do is put in writing that the school may not release their contact information — name, address and phone number — to the military.

In Santa Ana, a group of women organized community meetings to alert parents about opting out. In Sylmar, student protesters have mobilized a delete-your-name campaign every time recruiters visit campus. And a group of Pacific Palisades activists has visited more than a dozen high schools throughout the region to distribute forms that students can use to strike their names from lists provided to the armed forces.

"We're trying to inform people of their rights," said Erika Herran, 16, a member of the Young Political Activists at Sylmar High School. "They definitely know more than before, but there's still a lot more to be done."

1. when do the schools release the information?
Cause opting out after it is sent is kind of counter productive isn't it?

5. If I hand in a request the first day of school will that be soon enough?
Or will they have already sent it during the summer?

9. Yes, schools are supposed to provide forms
but may not. Someone lower in this topic gave an opt out form website. My teen "forgot" to sign when did this at their high school, but decided it didn't matter since is a conscientious objector anyway.

15. Don't forget to get off the Pentagon list
which, effectively, does an end run around the NCLB law by collecting information on minors without parental permission. The people at JAMRS said the way to stop them is to have Congress pass a law. Meanwhile, your child's name won't be removed from the database but be flagged no call.

2. Go teens go.
Good job. Anti-recruitment by teens works better than by adults. Good job guys.

6. I love that the kids are leading the way
And I also think that will bode well for having them vote and work to get out the vote.

17. Thanks, I just made copies
The recruiters are going to a local beach.
Gonna lure the kids in with free swag.

My hubby and I will be there and will hand
these out to parents and kids as counter-
recruiters. Stay tuned, as I will post photos

7. This Past Spring Break "they did just that" to my local Community College
Edited on Sun Aug-07-05 09:38 PM by AuntiBush
Professors including Math genius' said they'd never seen anything like it. Not only were they "not" allowed on campus during spring-break, something that was unprecedented in the history of the college, they said they were ordered not to set foot on campus, much less their offices. These professors (between them) had anywhere from 15 to 24+ years on the job at this campus.

Of course, this didn't occur at a wealthier, country-located, very Republican college not far up the road in the next county-up. Only to this one where some of the hardest, most diligent, sad-looking, poorest of the poor kids attend.

Fortunately, I'm too old to come for -- but the thought that who knows who has my information makes me sick. Thanks for the heads-up. Will pass it around, but I've noticed something since Nov. 2004: Everything * says he's going to do, he already has.

Think about it. Drilling for oil in Alaska was set-up prior to being voted on; Pell Grants: Hit 2 semesters prior to the mention of it, and on and on.

What has become of our country... I know, I know... it's the last line I can think of without swearing.

8. "No Child Left Behind" in the
recruiting station?

Those assholes can get directories of kids names in the name of "The No Child Left Behind" Act? Like a hit list?

Republicans, too? You'd think they'd be a little upset about this!

11. This is part of the NCLB Act
the military gets the names of them all, and other information, unless they opt out. Schools that receive gvt money must provide them with the information unless the student has opted out. Schools that receive gvt money are supposed to give students/parents an opt out form every yr, and need to provide them if asked, but many don't. Ours (even in a liberal town) didn't have any made up until our local teenpeace group had a (rally?) handing out forms and information. The school came up with a form the next wk.

No Child Left Behind. right.

13. I guess home-schooled kids are exempt
but then, I'd guess that since most of them are really good Christian conservatives, they probably rush down to the recruiter's office and sign up as soon as they are eligible? Or, maybe they have "other priorities"?

16. Tell the military recruiters to use a different sort of list
One:

a) Go to http://www.fundrace.org/neighbors.php
b) Enter your zipcode in the "Search by Location" field.
c) Give the recruiters a list of all the names that are highlighted in red

Two:

a) Got to http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/index.asp
b) Select your state in the "state" field
c) Enter "Bush" in the "recipient" field
d) Select 2006, 2004, and 2002 in the "election cycles" field
e) Give the recruiters the list of Bush donors for their state
f) You may want to select "sort by amount," since it will only display the first 1,000 records
g) You may also want to limit your search to a particular zipcode.

For example, here are the top Bush donors in Massachusetts:
http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/search.asp?Order=A&txtName=&txtState=MA&txtZip=&txtEmploy=&txtCand=Bush&txt2006=Y&txt2004=Y&txt2002=Y&txt2000=&txt1998=&txt1996=&txt1994=&txt1992=&txt1990=&txtSoft=N
