Bush focuses on long-term impact of energy bill

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Aug 8 (Reuters) - As oil prices hit another new high, President George W. Bush on Monday signed an energy bill he called vital to the U.S. economy but conceded that it offered no short-term relief from rising gasoline costs.

The $14.5 billion legislation, passed by Congress after a four-year battle, boosts oil, natural gas and electricity supplies and promotes alternative energy sources. Bush said it was "a critical first step."

"We're not going to solve our energy challenges overnight," he said. "Most of the serious problems, such as high gasoline costs and rising dependence on foreign oil, have developed over decades. It's going to take years of focused effort to alleviate those problems."

The price of a barrel of crude oil hit a new high of more than $63 on Monday. The national average price of a gallon of gas is $2.29. The United States relies on foreign oil to meet 60 percent of its daily petroleum demand of almost 21 million barrels. Gasoline use accounts for 2 out of every 5 barrels consumed.

1. Well, he's right about one thing. It WILL take years of focused effort.
Of course, this piece of shit bill does NOTHING in the way of starting such an effort. But we wouldn't want to hurt his feelings.

2. I predict those of us with low electric rates will see a big increase
Not only does this bill do very little besides the daylight savings provision to reduce energy consumption but it deregulates electric production removing safeguards put in place by FDR. This may help out the big cities to obtain adequate power but I expect to eventually see much higher rates in those low cost areas of country with low demand and plentiful electicity once companies start consolidating.

3. If he would just stop subsidizing the Oil Industry with war & low
employment in the USA & tax cuts to make the market roar the economy itself would say : Oil? This is a problem - smaller cars, alternative energy is more cost effective.

Their also would not be debt. USA would not have to invade every single country in the world that threatens to go with Euros. That will be a very, very long list.
