Rumsfeld says Iranian weapons found in Iraq

US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Tuesday that weapons "unambiguously from Iran" have been found in Iraq, and said it was "unhelpful" of Teheran to allow such weapons to cross the border.

"It is true that weapons clearly, unambiguously from Iran have been found in Iraq," Rumsfeld told reporters.

He would not comment on whether there was official Iranian involvement in the transfer of weapons, but said: "It's a big border and unhelpful for Iranians to be allowing weapons those of types to be crossing the border."

8. Not much to go on there, leaves many unanswered questions
Is this an unsupported assertion?
What is the nature of the weapons?
Who found them, when did that happen
Where were they found?
When did they enter Iraq? When could they have entered Iraq?
Are these military weapons or something that could have been manufactured and sold on the black market?

16. I have a couple of observations -
1) How does Rummy know the weapons are "unambiguously" from Iran. I assume they're blown up by the time the US gets to inspect them. How can you tell from dust? Did they have a "Made in Iran" sticker? Man, he's smarter than I thought.

2) What about Iraqi bombs? Like the 250 tons of it left at the Al-Qaqaa weapons dump?

30. Also today: US weapons found in Canada!
This is the story in Toronto: a startling rise in armed violence, due largely to guns smuggled across the border.

For instance:

Mayor seeks PM's help
Toronto Mayor David Miller called the Prime Minister's Office yesterday to ask for help with the flood of illegal guns that have been used in a recent spate of shootings.

"The Prime Minister's Office assured me that they are already working to try and deal with the issue of gun smuggling," Miller said at a joint news conference yesterday with Toronto police Chief Bill Blair after two more shootings occurred Sunday night and yesterday morning, raising the toll to seven dead and 16 injured since July 24.

Given that half of the guns used in Toronto crimes come from the United States, Miller said Ottawa needs to do more to stop them at the border.

Spike in seizures of U.S. stun guns alarms officials

123. US made weapons found throughout the world....
When the USSR invaded Afghanistan, we provided the Taliban with weapons and cash. Now when we illegally invade Iraq, it is suddenly a sin for their neighbors provide weapons to our enemy. Of course Iran is providing weapons. I'm would be surprised if Pakistan, Saudia Arabia, Libya and Syria weren't also. It is a war stupid. We didn't mind that Russia and China provided weapons to the North Vietnamese during our last major illegal invasion. We are pretty selective about choosing our enemy. They have to be extremely weak and unwilling to fight back. Then we will bully them around and destroy their country.

40. Cheney + Pakistan = Iran
Cheney + Pakistan = Iran

By Jason Leopold

When news of Pakistan’s clandestine program showed how the country’s top nuclear scientist was secretly selling Iran and North Korea, the so-called “Axis of Evil,” blueprints for building an atomic bomb were uncovered last year, the world’s leaders waited, with baited breath, to see how President Bush would punish Pakistan’s President Pervez Musharaff.

Bush has, after all, spent his entire two terms in office talking tough about countries and dictators that conceal weapons of mass destruction and even tougher on individuals who supply rogue nations and terrorists with the means to build WMDs. For all intents and purposes, Pakistan and Musharraf fit that description.

Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and top members of the administration reacted with shock when they found out that Abdul Qadeer Khan, Pakistan ’s top nuclear scientist, spent the past 15 years selling outlaw nations nuclear technology and equipment. So it was sort of a surprise when Bush, upon finding out about Khan’s proliferation of nuclear technology, let Pakistan off with a slap on the wrist. But it was all an act. In fact, it was actually a cover-up designed to shield Cheney because he knew about the proliferation for more than a decade and did nothing to stop it.

Like the terrorist attacks on 9-11, the Bush administration had mountains of evidence on Pakistan’s sales of nuclear technology and equipment to nations vilified by the U.S. -nations that are considered much more of a threat than Iraq -but turned a blind eye to the threat and allowed it to happen.

Dense Secretary Ronald Dumsfeld said Tuesday that weapons "unambiguously from the United States" have been found in Iraq, and said it was "unhelpful" of Washington to allow such weapons to cross the border.

"It is true that weapons clearly, unambiguously from the United States have been found in Iraq," Dumsfeld told reporters.

91. Ha!
They can't even "guard" the concrete walled few miles of Iraqi
territory they call their own ("the Green Zone"). Even the dumbest
squaddie over there knows that to be sent out to "guard" the border
is a death sentence - no blast walls, no guard towers, no floodlights,
just lots & lots of space for landmines, snipers, mortar ambushes, ...

The thing that gets me over this is that some dumb shits will ALWAYS
believe the administration's lies ... they just can't get it into
their head that the politicians are murderous, lying bastards.

61. Rumsfeld: Iranian Weapons Found in Iraq
Edited on Tue Aug-09-05 08:49 PM by BlueStateModerate
<snip>
WASHINGTON — Some weapons entering Iraq are coming from Iran, Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld said Tuesday, though he indicated it was unclear whether they were coming from elements of the Iranian government or from other parties.

"Weapons clearly, unambiguously from Iran have been found in Iraq," he told a Pentagon briefing. "It's a big border. It's notably unhelpful for the Iranians to allow weapons of those types to cross the border." He did not provide further specifics.

By Robert Baer
Newsweek International

Aug. 15, 2005 issue - Ten days ago, in Damascus, I sat down with a Syrian official I've known for years and asked the question on everyone's mind. What's with the jihadists crossing Syria's border into Iraq? There is no way anyone can control a long border like that, he said, sounding the official line. Then he dropped a bombshell. Of 1,200 suspected suicide bombers arrested by Syrian authorities since the beginning of the war in 2003, 85 percent have been Saudis.

"It's a big border." says Rummy. What an arrogant asswipe this man is. First of all how many experienced military men, most either prematurely retired or demoted, told him we needed more troops to SECURE the fucking border, not to mention to protect the infrastructure and to keep the country from sliding into chaos?

Second, how many tons of weapons were missing when we once again didn't have enough troops on the ground from the beginning to secure the very weapons that are most likely being used now to kill our own soldiers?

Third, we shouldn't be there at all. This is an illegal war brought to us by lies and scare tactics and being run by the most incompetent bunch of jackasses ever.

Rumsfeld: Iraq bombs 'clearly from Iran'
Tehran denies involvement

Wednesday, August 10, 2005; Posted: 10:35 a.m. EDT (14:35 GMT)

Donald Rumsfeld, right, and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Richard Myers speak to reporters Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said Tuesday that weapons recently confiscated in Iraq were "clearly, unambiguously from Iran" and admonished Tehran for allowing the explosives to cross the border.

Iran's defense minister denied the claims in a report carried by the state-run news agency IRNA.

According to Ali Shamkhani, Iran is playing no role in Iraqi affairs, including "its alleged involvement in bomb explosions."

105. I really do wonder if we've already started bombing Iran yet
After all, we were bombing Iraq before we officially started the war and we're hearing the same bullshit rhetoric from Rummy and Bolton and the rest of the team about Iran's misbehavior. As we know, the plan was first Iraq, then Iran, then Syria so we are right on schedule. If we haven't started bombing them yet, anyone care to place a bet as to when we will be starting? Before Congress comes back from recess perhaps? Are they allowed to attach Iran without permission from the Senate?

Ooops- silly me! I forgot who we are dealing with. They don't play by any rules (or they make up their own as they go along). Therefore, if they feel like attacking Iran, (or simply dropping a few bombs), I'm sure they will do so regardless of Congressional approval.

That's a big border and it's notably unhelpful for the Iranians to be allowing weapons of those types to cross the border. It's a problem for the Iraqi government. It's a problem for the coalition forces. It's a problem for the international community. And ultimately it's a problem for Iran." --Rummy

Rummy's blamed everybody but Clinton (...give it time) but isn't this actually Rummy's problem for not authorizing a plan securing the borders, despite noted security issues on the Syrian line?

Geez, this guy clearly should really quit pointing out the shortcomings in the war plans that he OK's. Past plans for troop deployment and allocation have also famously failed to secure weapons depots (as noted in an earlier post) in favor of securing oil reserves, and I believe even some cities where victory has been claimed have to be left vulnerable as troops are scattered to other parts of the country.

Whoops...Rummy actually did have a plan to stop proliferation from Iran: the non-existent flower-bearing Iraqi folks greeting us as liberators were supposed to guard that border.
My bad.
