Canada's next governor general is French, female

OTTAWA, Aug 10 (AFP) - Canada's next governor general, who represents Britain's Queen Elizabeth in this country, is a French citizen, her spokesperson said Wednesday.

Michaelle Jean, a Haitian-born journalist who immigrated to Canada as a child and settled in the mostly French-speaking province of Quebec, will assume her duties as of September 27, representing the queen, who is Canada's head of state.

Her appointment was announced August 4 by Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Catherine Gagnaire, the spokesperson for the future governor general, told AFP Jean holds dual French-Canadian citizenship and is a French citizen through her marriage to French filmmaker Jean Daniel Lafond.

Lafond
left France in 1974 and obtained Canadian citizenship in 1981. Several other famous Canadians also hold dual French citizenship, La Presse newspaper reported Wednesday, including Environment Minister Stephane Dion and former Quebec minister Louise Beaudouin.

2. Everything I have seen, heard and read has impressed me on
our new GG. I watched the press conference on her being chosen and she is very articulate as well as genuine, imo.

9. she's got first-hand experience with many important issues ...
Her dad was kidnapped and tortured by Duvalier's thugs. Her mom has Alzheimers and had to be cared for at home, for many years. She's adopted an orphan from Haiti. So as far as I'm concerned, the fact that she hasn't held political office isn't as big a thing as her critics are making it out to be.

She's already said that she wants to focus attention on human rights and children's issues -- and I believe she already knows more about the challenges faced by caregivers, and the problems Canada will have to deal with if we want to get involved in overseas nation-building, than most of the politicians currently in office. If appointing a GG allows the PM to draw from a pool larger than politicians or "establishment" families, I think we should keep doing it! Excellent choice. I'm confident that she'll do us proud. And I bet her response of "I've never been a token" is going to be as famous as Sheila's "I'm nobody's baby".

10. Only a couple of them
had ever held political office. The position isn't supposed to be political.

I agree...I think she'll be a great GG.
