Bob Woodward Predicts a Cheney vs. Hillary Race in 2008

By E&P Staff

NEW YORK If Bob Woodward is right, it will be The Old Man and the She in the 2008 showdown for the White House. Speaking in Colorado last night, the Washington Post journalist predicted that Vice President Dick Cheney and former First Lady Hillary Clinton would face off in the next election for president.

Speaking as part of the Aspen Institute's McCloskey Speaker Series, Woodward explained why it is "highly likely" President Bush might implore Cheney to seek the Oval Office.

"He would be 67 if he ran and was elected," Woodward said, according to a Denver Post account. "Reagan was 69. Republicans always like the old warhorse….both parties like to nominate vice presidents. ... Cheney would do it, and I think it's highly likely, so stay tuned."

Otherwise, Woodward talked mostly about two elected presidents, Nixon and Bush. He called the Nixon tapes "the gift that just keeps on giving" and said history would judge Bush's decision to go to war, and it's still unclear what it will say.

It's going to be winning the swing voters and peeling off enough red staters for an electoral victory. HRC can't do that, even against Cheney.

17. cheney is beatable
but only if the dems actually fight this time. if he's the nominee, it will be decided before the first GOP primaries.

the dems must attack first, and frequently. they must have both barrels loaded before he announces his candidacy, and commence firing the second his press conference ends.

but my gut says: his health is a liability, and the GOP wants someone prettier.

20. Woodward was ONCE a great reporter, but he's gone nuts!
There's no way Cheney is going to be the Pub candidate! His pollo numbers have been in the pitts for years, I don't think even his heart device would be able to carry him through the rigors of a national campaign, he's got a gay daughter that he sort of supports, his links to Halliburton would kill his chances.

I guess Woodward is looking for some new publicity to keem his name in the media, but this one is just dumb.

54. hear hear. If Woodward predicted that the sun was coming up tomorrow...
...I'd start preparing for perpetual midnight.

He got facts in the introductory paragraphs to one of his Post stories wrong: incorrectly attributing the command ordering all commercial airplanes down to transportation secretary Norm Mineta instead of an FAA official, which was widely known at the time.
That in and of itself may not be so bad, but the problem is that in the face of overwhelming opinion that's he was wrong, he refused to concede that his story may be inaccurate.

38. I've said it for years now here, Cheney will run & with the Bush Blessing.
Well, I now feel somewhat finally vindicated. Or at least I don't feel so lonesome in my belief that Cheney plans to run in 2008.

There are many here at the DU who know that I have long believed that Dick Cheney, in spite of the many public protestations to the contrary by him and his wife, will indeed actively seek out the GOP nomination in 2008.

George W. Bush will be impartial, but old man Bush, will be the one to say something along the lines of "Well, there's not a man finer on earth than John McCain and I have the greatest respect for all the GOP candidates, but speaking for just me and Barbara, we are hoping that it will be Dick."

Cheney will run.

43. What about the old theory...
...that Cheney was going to resign for "health reasons" like in mid to late 2006, and whatever puppet the PNAC/Neocons have picked next was going to be inserted as the next VP, thus gaining the public visage to rise as the next a(R)se-hole candidate for president.

Anyway, isn't Cheney tired of being president? He's been at it de facto for five years already...

52. Cheney may sound absurd, but the GOP doesn't have anyone better
That was one of the few threads of silver lining in the dark cloud of last fall's elections. The growing fissure (held together only by duct tape) between the religious fascist wing and the old-school libertarian conservative wing of the repub party was all the more exploitable because of the fact that the party had no obvious successors waiting in the wings (as they did with poppy bush after the reagan years). DeLay's a long shot b/c he's so divisive, Frist is out b/c he's a bore, Jeb is hampered by general public antipathy toward dynasty (as well as his first name--only in the mind of Aaron Sorkin will we have a president named Jeb or Jed)--anyway, the list goes on.

So Cheney may have health problems (and is, as we well know, a lunatic), but who better have they got? At least with Cheney they can argue for continuity.

That said, I'd love to see Cheney get the nod, as anybody this side of Lieberman could beat him.

Really though, he hasn't reacted well whenever the media pays any attention to him or his family so even if his health was up to it I don't think he'd run.

The fact that no clear sucessor-puppet is apparent suggests to me he plans to return to the private sector in 2009.

74. The last I knew, Cheney had a 15% popularity rating as vice
I hope ho DOES run. Can we say, LANDSLIDE AGAINST?

NO chance he can win. None. A ham sandwich could beat him, without campaigning.

76. If they run Cheney
then they know the fix is in on the voting tabulation. If they run Cheney its next level time because we can't win the conventional way from that moment on.

77. Cheney, with his dicey ticker?
Doubt he could take the stress of campaigning. They'd have to have a physician on hand at all times to shoot him up with digitalis and defibrillate as necessary. Hell, he'd probably keel over halfway through. Woodward has apparently gone mad.
