UN Council should not hear Iran nuke dispute- China
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N10499261.htm

UNITED NATIONS, Aug 10 (Reuters) - China on Wednesday opposed any U.N. Security Council consideration of the dispute over Iran's nuclear program, saying the issue should be handled solely by the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna.

Iran on Wednesday broke U.N. seals at a uranium plant, escalating a confrontation with Western nations that fear Tehran may develop nuclear weapons. The IAEA's 35-member board of governors, of which China is a member, can refer the controversy to the Security Council in New York.

"I think it is up to Vienna to come up with a solution. I think it is not up to the Security Council," China's U.N. ambassador, Wang Guangya, told reporters.

"The council has too many things on the table. Why should we have more?" Wang said.

1. Sounds like there might be a Chinese veto in the future
They haven't used their veto often, but I'd plan on China vetoing any Security Council moves against Iran. They aren't going to sit by this time. If nothing else, they have too many economic interests in Iran now.

3. It will never come to that
Edited on Wed Aug-10-05 05:52 PM by NNN0LHI
Too many other countries with similar nuclear programs (Brazil, Argentina, South Africa, etc.) could find themselves targeted in this same way if they were to go along with this. There is no real support for any UN action against Iran. Just idle threats.

Plus as someone was pointing out today Iran could cut their oil production output by half a million barrels a day to the world market which in turn would cause prices to rise so much that they would still makes as much if not more money than they are making right now.

I think they have us by the short ones.

4. here comes SCO
First, they soft sell at the UN (EHM's; Economic Hit Men).
Second, they do a hard sell and threaten trade sanctions.
Third, they send in death squads to assassinate or foment coups d'etat.
Fourth, they go to war.

5. Then the White House can say "See? I told you the UN is worthless."

It's the party-line copout on FoxNews. We had to invade Iraq because diplomacy is worthless with those UN oil-for-food scammers.
