Health gap between rich and poor 'still growing'

David Batty and agencies
Thursday August 11, 2005

People in poor areas continue to suffer worse health than those in affluent neighbourhoods despite government efforts to reduce the gap, researchers warned today.

The inequality gap, measured by infant mortality and life expectancy, has widened between the most deprived areas of England and the wealthiest, according to a report by a government advisory group.

The findings emerged as the Department of Health (DoH) announced the deployment of so-called "health trainers" in 12 of the most deprived parts of the country.

The government pledged to reduce the inequality gap by 10% between 1997 and 2010. But the study by the DoH's Scientific Reference Group of Health Inequalities found the gap in life expectancy between the bottom fifth and the general population had widened by 2% for men and 5% for women between 1997-99 and 2001-03. This means that life expectancy in the wealthiest areas is 7-8 years longer than in the poorest areas.
